I shoot hand-held and with a flash for about 95% of my macro. But the assassin wasn't going anywhere, so I took off the flash and used a tripod, just to see how it would turn out. Very dim late-afternoon shade, flat light; I prefer the flash shot. And here's my diffuser:

Thanks for showing your setup! Will have to make one of those.
I like both the flash and the natural lighting shots. I like what the flash did to the background and the "pose" but I like the foreground on the natural lighting shot better. I'd be very happy to have made either of these photographs though!
