hi all I am thinking of upgrading my 50d and as prices of 1diii s are almost the same as 7d s I cannot decide which way to go .I have all sigma lenses and shoot mostly wildlife and motorsports/sports so use ai servo a lot .mostly want upgrade for the extra focus points and tracking ability as seem to lose shots due having only 9 focus points .any feedback welcome

The 1D III typically goes for around $150-$200 less than a 7D in the same condition, so go for it. I had quite a bit of trouble with my 50D with Sigma lenses whereas my 1D bodies were completely fine. I would get quite a bit slower AF with the Sigma lenses (150-500 OS and 50 1.4) and it would consistently front or back focus and it was very inconsistent. Perhaps I just needed to get those lenses calibrated to the 50D, but I didn't want to go through all of that and my 1D II had no issues. I eventually upgraded to the 1D III.

The 1D III handles a lot better than the 50D, has faster and more accurate AF and the IQ between the two isn't much different. The 50D has more resolution but the 1D III has better noise performance. The 1D III screen is a definite let down compared to the amazing one on the 50D, however. Just make sure you don't need the extra resolution and reach of the 7D over the 1D III if you decide to go the 1D III route.

I am constantly amazed by the apparent resolution of my 1DM3 images, as compared to those I got from my 18MP 1.6X crop sensor camera (the 7D) ...

I calculate the difference in crop factor and the much greater pixel density of the 1.6X crop sensor combine to place more than double (actually 2.18) the number pixels on a subject, all other considerations being equal.

That's why having long enough lenses is an important part of deciding if the 1DM3 is for you; you don't want to have to crop away many (if any) of the pixels in the frame to produce the final image.

i think over the last 6 or 7 years i have owned most if not all of the top of the range 1.6 crop factor cameras from both canon and nikon ,i have steadily advanced through the higher and ever higher range of available i.s.o models from both .
however on switching back to canon and getting the 7d to couple with my 400mm f5.6 i somehow felt that something was still missing ,being a member of the JUZA forum i went into it and did a search as you can on there pairing up various combos of lenses and camera bodies ,the one combo that shone out (in my price range i must add) was the 1D3 and 400mm f5.6 .
i was offered the loan of one from a now good friend and the results speak for themselves ,JUST DO IT .

I have yet to use my 1D3 to shoot airshow performances (heritage flights, Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, etc) so I don't know how it stacks against the 7D when using the 100-400L.

I still love my 7D because it's quite versatile, and I think that having access to near-1D performance for much cheaper helped me to get back into aviation photography and to have as much fun as I did for over 2.5 years until I had money for a 1D3 (when I got my 7D, the 1D4 was merely a year or so old, so finding a 1D3 for around $1k was not possible). I still think the 7D is a pocket 1D of sorts, but I do have one complaint: it's way too noisy, I'm pretty sure that Canon could have done a little better, or maybe kept the resolution slightly lower for better noise control.

I have a few from our 4-yr old granddaughter's teeball game this past weekend.
Humility is not something she has learned yet!
