Pricing doesn't work like that . A straight conversion of 127,000 yen to $1250 doesn't mean that's the price you would pay in the US, or that it is even the US MSRP. There are shipping costs, middlemen, import tariffs, etc. to be considered, not to mention Sigma's normally large discounts off the MSRP on their website. If the assumption of your post was correct, just based on the conversion rate, then this lens would be priced at $1338 AUD in Australia when you convert the yen to Australian dollars, but we know its being offered there for only $898! On Sigma's website all their Art lens are listed with two prices, the MSRP which is crossed out, and the "real" price. As an example, for the 35mm f/1.4 they show an MSRP of $1400, and a price of $899. That's around 65% of their stated MSRP.

Pretty remarkable.

Now if Sigma could hurry up and make a 17-40 killer that would be great!

Can you imagine a fast f/2.8 low distortion UWA zoom for less than $1000? That would be sweet.

Right on, I agree. I think we will see it for around $799-$899 range. I admit to some bias, because that's what I have saved for it..

It looks awesome, just not sure I can justify spending a grand on 50mm. I have 35, 85 and 135 already.

This lens has so much win written all over it seriously, watch the used 50L price tank and drop below $800 which I still won't buy lol

I don't see any answer from Canikon which can compete with this. All Canon will do is either a 50LII and charges $2k but still won't be as good as the Sigma, or some lame 50 f2 IS for $800.

I'll take one for $800 if you have one for sale.

They are rumored to be possibly doing a 16-20 2.8 and I would be so all over that.

I'd ignore a 16mm zoom, the 16-35 doesn't want for much in my use. Definitely good enough. I'd love them to have a go at a 12-24/4 though. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Talk about a definitive landscape lens.

It's an interesting lens, but in terms of sharpness, contrast, and speed, the image quality is consumer-class. There's no Canon or Sigma wide-angle that competes directly with the 14-24/2.8. I'd like to see one. If they can do the 12-24 range at f/2.8, so much the better.
