Vix, zoom feature of flashes varies how wide spread the flash will be. Obviously the wider the zoom the wider the flash, but you the flash power will fall off at a shorter distance.

Depending on your modifier (or bare) changing the zoom can change the effect of a modifier to an extent.

(probably others that am forgetting!) No wonder I'm broke! Having a great time with it though. The trioplan, asahi 35mm and the pentacon electric 100 have been my faves so far.

Well crap, I'm glad I asked. It didn't look like noticeable difference cause I kept shooting at the same distance from my test subject. I'll bump up the zoom then; I'm doing environmental and don't want the stand flash unit in the way that's for sure.

I don't think the zoom setting on the flash has so much to do with the camera to subject distance. It's more dependant on your field of view or focal length of the lens you're using.

All else being equal, shooting at the wide end of the flash zoom will diffuse the flash to fill a wider view at the sacrifice of maximum flash distance. With the flash shooting at the tele end of the zoom the light will be more focused into a narrower field of view and your maximum flash distance would tend to increase.
