Why would anyone want compatibles with a printer like this?

That is easy, because they work just as good as the canon ones, and cost Half the price, any questions?

That would require a lot of work to make profiles for off brand ink and the hundreds of papers out there so I would stick to oem ink sets.

I have a question. When you say they work just as well as the canon ones, does that mean they are just as stable over time?

I guess it depends on your goals and needs. But if I'm spending $1k for this level of quality I'm not going to cheap-out on ink or paper.

For sale: Plain white copy paper to go with the off brand inks.

Give your photos that "special" pop!

Wouldn't this post go in the Selling section anyway? Post a pic of your "OEM Alternative" inks in your ad too.

The compatible ones are the Canon CLI-8 cartridges I believe. Or is this the PGI one?

I picked up a Pro-1 Printer a few months ago from another member here. I have had to replace the Matte black ink so far, then just recently I see I am low on another color. Rather than buy them one at a time I bought the whole PGI pack from B&H for $360.00 dollars. I am going to track how many prints I get as well as what size I print to see what the true cost is. I have read the first set of ink tanks go quicker than subsequent tanks so we will see what happens. If you read the reviews compatible ink typically does not work, and I have no desire to pack up that printer to send it in for service if a bad ink tank clogs the nozzle.

Along those lines I had spoken with a Canon tech about a month ago regarding an issue with my IPF printer. He commented then that they have ink tanks in some of the printers in their lab that have literally been in for years. Try that with an off brand and see what you get!

But don't Canon inks officially expire?

They do. That is what actually started my conversation with the tech. He told me that the date is recommended best practice but that they have cartridges in printers that are years old.

Remember this you bought the printer to print, if I was NOT going to used it, then I would have never got a 1,000 printer I don't have to worry about the ink dying up or expiring.

Like Herman Edwards once said: "You play to win the game hello" and you buy a printer to print not to sit.
