Rick, my feeling is that for photographers like you the a7R represents more positives than negatives. The dynamic range and resolution is just killer.
1. I do feel the metabones III adapter is recommended - Novoflex is working on one too, but till then I don't like the alternatives. I primarily use my Zeiss MF lenses with the Metabones adapter and I feel it's a fantastic fit. As an accessory to the Metabones adapter
I hightly recommend the Hejnar Photo L-bracket and spacer. This means the Metabones adapter is bearing the full load of the lens and camera when mounted to a tripod. I'm not at all enthused with the notion of using a camera-mounted L-bracket on my a7 and a7R cameras because then the camera's lens mount has to bear the full burden of the cantilevered adapter
and lens. Having the L-bracket attached to the Metabones adapter puts everything in better balance.
2. I have an a7 and a7R and don't have any light leak issues. I did slip a simple rubber o-ring to reduce any potential concerns, but frankly I haven't seen it.
Another potential unwanted light issue concerns the Metabones adapter itself. Apparently stray light can bounce around inside the adapter and reduce contrast. I'm not sure, but I think this mainly affects TS-E lens users. I've tested/experienced it myself with my TS-E 24mm II. I even took pains to install black flock paper - the same stuff Canon uses inside the TS-E lens - on my Metabones adapter. Not sure if it really helped though.
3. Don't know about a proper Intervolometer, but I did purchase this cable release which lets me do bulb exposures. I have a Promote Control I use with my 5D III, but it's incompatible with the a7/R. Grrr.
4. The batteries are small and cheap.

They don't last a whole long time, but it's really easy and not-painful to have an abundance of them. I've got about six of them - total overkill.
Thanks for the detailed answers David! I was reading a review on FM and it showed the L-bracket with the adapter, seems like a good balance/fit since I find an L-bracket as an essential accessory. Which cable release did you end up with? I'm not thrilled with the idea of being tethered to my phone for a remote shutter as I've always preferred a wired (well, preferably wireless) release. Sounds like I'll keep my eye open for an A7R and Metabones adapter.
