Does such a thing exist? External HDD question

Hi,

I've been looking around and can't seem to find anything. Here is what I'm looking for.

External hard drive
Thunderbolt
BUS powered
SSD
Preferably daisy chainable
Not an arm and a leg

This has led me to looking for an external hard drive enclosure, with which I can pop in my own drives. But it seems like because of something Thunderbolt related that they don't exist.

The only thing I've found is a 500gb Lacie Rugged, which is $100 more than TWO 1tb traditional hard drives.

There's got to be something out there I can DIY to get fast and safe backups while on the road.

Any thoughts?

PS, let's not talk about having extra memory cards, etc. It's not a good solution for me.

In short, no. Thunderbolt is still new and pricey so there isn't a lot out there atm, at what there is is generally pretty expensive. If you look hard enough you might find something, maybe check eBay and the like, someone might have damaged the HDD inside one and have the case for sale?

USB3.0 is probably your best solution atm, it's faster than any HDD and fast enough for most SSD's and USB3 Hubs are cheapish if you are low on ports (assuming that's why you want to be able to daisy chain).

Unless someone has ideas, I think I'll pick up two of these:

MyDigital 512gb SSD

and

ExpressCard adapter

Irritating that I have this glorious Thunderbolt port and nothing to do with it.

That's just it, it's NOT new. My laptop is going on 3 years old now...

I want to daisy chain to be able to write to both drives at the same time.

Thunderbolt is a little more expensive, but for really good prices, check out Other World Computing.

USB3 is where it's at if you want a good price.

FOr the same $500 you are spending above you can get a single 1tb SSD from the likes of Samsung or Crucial and get a nice bus-powered USB 3 external enclosure.

No need for 2 drives unless you want 2 drives for redundancy purposes.

Yeah, I need the redundancy. I'll be on the road for 5 weeks, but I think 475 or so GB should be sufficient...

Oh, and OWC doesn't have anything Thunderbolt in SSD.

Something to possibly look at would be a Drobo mini, won't be anywhere near as fast and probably more expensive, but can fit it out with 2-4TB depending on raid level

The Drobo isn't bus powered. I don't want to count on always having access to power.

Pegasus J2 is 512 SSD and thunderbolt. Might be what your after

I have a disk which fits your spec, can't remember the make, when I'm back home I'll msg again. It is 'I think' a my passport. It is the type that has a thunderbolt dock and then the 2.5" disk in a caddy is swappable. Nice thing about this is that the connection is the esata harddisk connection. So you can put any esata 2.5" drive on it. I have a corsair 256GD SSD and a 1TB convention drive which I use.

I will msg in two days with the make. It is thunderbolt 1 and was bought over two years ago so should be readily available to you on ebay and cheaper than when I bought.

Pegasus J2 is pretty promising but wow, $1400?! The Lacie is $499...it's becoming more attractive by the minute.

Oh god! Thats a lot! Sorry didn't look at the price!

The drive I have is the Seagate GoFlex. That works with the caddies they sell and any esata 2.5" HDD.
