I took some photos for my friends daughter in studio because I got tired of the 35MPH winds constantly beating us. I also had my friend snap a few of me since I needed an updated picture of myself since the photographer never gets to have any good pics of themselves.
Some were taken with my homemade ring light and the other was a 3 light setup.
Gear used : Canon 5dmk3 and Sigma 85 1.4

Thanks for sharing the behind the scenes of your ring light, but the ring light creates a strange reflection in #1 & #2 that need to be corrected.

Well the catchlights were good enough for Esquire...

Except for Obama, that is.

Nice work and cool DIY light, BTW! :)

Your photos are great, but I have to agree with the others about your catchlights.

The first thing I was drawn to was the alien eyes.

The catch lights isn't the problem, it's the look of them. I think your bulbs are too far apart, creating a dotted catch light instead of one smooth, continuous light. It is distracting. Consider filling in the spaces and it'd likely create a much better catch light.

Yep, those circles call immediate attention to themselves and thus, for me, detract from otherwise good portraits.

Plus one for this.

I saw those in Esquire too. Didn't like them there, either.

I'm accross the canal just south of Ballard, the town Seattle usurped in 1907.

Have you seen ESPN interviews and photos lately? They use this style ring light with gritty processing. Looks cool to me but I would not use that for every shot.

I disagree, they are unique and I wouldn't change them.
