First time poster here. I just picked up a lightly used 1D3 and am really enjoying the pro build, AF, blazing speed and clean files. All the shortcomings in this body (low res sensor & screen, no video, limited liveview) seem to be addressed in the 1D4 but the 1D3 was the better value for me at roughly 1/3 the cost!

I plan to capture more action shots of my toddler and dip my toes into surf photography. This seems like a shockingly friendly forum with actual constructive criticism most of the time. I look forward to posting often.

A few shots from my first days with the new body. All with the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS. Click for higher res as the compressed versions lose some detail and "sparkle".

-Bob

with Tokina 11-16 2.8 @ 11mm, needs a crop to remove vignetting - 12mm is fine and makes a great UWA for the 1D3 (for its price)

I'm glad its such a sturdy beast. I was way off on a 4x4 road coming down a steep very slanted wash area and the wife said MONSTER!!! I hit the park break opened the door and almost fell opened the back door to get my camera and then did fall as I was falling the door came open and in slow motion the camera fell off the back seat on to the road and started following me down the gully. Caught my balance caught the camera and caught this guy and also some others on this trip. Glad its tough.

Howdy, all!

Came back a while ago from South Africa, on a 10-day tour. Took one of my 1D3 body (the backup unit, to be precise), and a select short-list of lenses. Unfortunately my 300mm f/2.8 L IS-II had not yet arrived, back then.

Because of 24-105 f/4 failure (bad diaphragm assembly), I ended up stuck to my loyal 70-200 f/4 L IS, and the 24 f/1.4 L-II... The large majority of the shots coming from the zoom, though. Almost all based on camera's .JPG captures. Talk about a "tour-de-force", for the 1D3.

Please, forgive any ommissions, here, as this is my first time on this area of the planet, my first Safari, as well (had to capture as I went, with little time to waste):

Some great shots in the last few days folks!

I'm here to report that my LOVE-hate-love-ambivelent-love-love relationship with the 1D MkIII has come to an end. I have sold my 1D III.

The first one I had (one of the first batch sold in the U.S. @ B&H) was one of the ones plagued with Af issues, never to recover despite 5 trips to Canon. And yet, though it was terrible for bird photography, it was stellar at getting my marvelous images in Africa;

Africa Gallery here; http://jakehegnauer.zenfolio.com/p326415976 (external link)
(note, all of the bird flight shots in Africa were taken with a fully AF functional 1D2, but the vast majority f the shots are 1D3. I feel the color rendition and detail difference is evident.

My 2nd 1D III, provided to me by Canon U.S.A.'s Chuck Westfall, was a different story, and was a fantastic birder in the Galapagos;

...and a great all around workhorse since then.

It's been a wild ride with this Camera, but it was often a great one.

Keep enjoying it!
I bid you a fond farewell. Viva 1D MkIII

Hi, I'm a new owner of an amazing 1DMKIII!
Slowly I'm reading all this fantastic thread. First I want to thank you all, because the informations you share are really precious. And it's nice to read so much and see so many beautiful images about one great passion.
I was very lucky to find a 1DMKIII used very little and kept in perfect condition, almost like new.
I bought it a week ago and still have not practiced with all the options and variables in the autofocus system, but I'm really pleased and happy to have found it.
It's an incredible pleasure to hold it, feel its solidity and especially that sound ... FRRRRRRRR of 10 fps.
I'm attaching a few pictures made these days, nothing special, but just not to write only!
(All images were taken with 1DMKIII + Tamron 70/200 2.8 VC)

Ivan
