Hi all. Could do with some advice. I've just bought the Elinchrom D-lite RX 400 studio kit and I seem to be having a slight issue with sync speed. I'm running a Canon 5D mkiii which I put on a shutter speed if 200. I pop the lights into high speed sync but I still seem to get a slight grey band at the bottom of my images. If I drop the ss to 160 then it doesn't seem to be an issue. It may just be light fall off but if I turn the camera to portrait orientation and take a shot it happens on the right side of the image. Is it a sync speed issue? Can you advise me please.

Thanks

Simon

Yes, it is a sync speed issue.
What do you trigger the strobe with? Cable or radio trigger?

Yep. Turn your shutter speed down to 1/160.

Using the 5D3, I've not been able to get 1/200 reliably with either Skyport (Elinchrom) or with Cactus V5.

Sorry.

You should be able to get 200 with the cable trigger. I have the 5D II and an off brand strobe and I can get 200 if I use the cable to trigger the strobe. If I use my Pocket Wizard Plus III or my Yongnuo 603C, I can only get 160.

I have the RX 4 and 5D3. Anything above 1/160 will give you the blackish line because the skyport does not sync fast enough. This is a known issue with the skyport with anything but their top model.

If I need faster shutter speeds, I use the pixel king transmitter/receiver. They allow high sync speeds and work great with the RX 4s and sync correctly even at much higher speeds (the fastest I needed and tested was at 1/2000 and it worked well).
They also allow me to use a speedlight along with the elinchrom if I need something small for filling.

Well, as far as I know, there is only one transmitter, which is the normal EL-Skyport Speed.
Activating the speed more (pressing TEST button for 5 seconds if you hadn't, else its on normal mode and more than explain your problems) will enable sync speeds to 1/250 and maybe higher (not officially but a few people said that it will).
But from my experience, its sometimes unreliable. So I prefer using better proven transmitters.

Just make sure its actually in speed mode.

Doesn't Pocket wizard do a module that allows the use of HyperSync? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pPHNcZ0AYQ (external link)

Not sure what shutter speed you are looking for but the PW go's way above 1/200

I'm sure many external syncs allow this. Problem is that when elinchrom advertise sync speeds which are not always reliable, you feel a bit cheated into having to buy external transmitter and receivers.

Make sure the head is in speed mode. Make sure it's in R2

Use the old fashioned flash sync cable that came with your RX, that should solve the problem, or at least improve it. Why do you need the 200ss anyway?
