I have a new 5DIII and I'm looking for advice on eye-fi or similar SD cards for the slot.

First what I want to do. I simply want to transfer files to my iPad for reviewing. The process that I used for my 5Dc was to use the iPad camera connector, and plug in the camera cord to the iPad and camera and transfer the files. I would rather not have to take the cord and the camera connector if I can avoid it. I don't want to control the camera or anything, i just want to down load raw files for viewing. I always shot Raw.

Now, my concerns. There are currently 4 eye-fi cards, and I'd like to get the cheapest card to accomplish the job.

Second concern, is will the eye-fi card in the SD slot slow down the camera. I understand that I one has an SD card and write to it, it will be much slower than a fast CF card because Canon does not support fast speeds for SD.

Will the eye-fi card affect my writing to the CF card? Since I don't want to save files to the SD slot, can i still use the card to transfer files from the CF card? Will it really matter then what size card I get, i.e. 8, 16 or 32gb card? From my reading I should be okay with the 8GB as it will transfer to the iPad. Even thought I shot Raw, I dont need it to transfer to my computer. I have a card reader for when I get back home.

Or should i go with another brand all together like the Transend card.

I tried the eye-fi 8gb, and could not get it to work reliably. I was trying to get it to transfer to my android phone, but only the shots I wanted transferred. I could not get it to work reliably, even when I just let it send every shot to the phone. I would get it to work, and then as soon as the camera would go to sleep it would never work again - until I plugged the card into my computer and reconfigured the card. It was really frustrating and I just gave up.

Can you clarify, what this means?

I wanted to be able to post a few shots to my fb throughout the day of a wedding, so just wanted to select a few to transfer to my phone for upload- without transferring all 2000. The transfer is slow and that would have killed my phone and camera batteries.
I got the idea one wedding when I overhead guests at the cocktail hour talking about a shot I did. I knew one of the gf of a groomsman had taken iPhone shots over my shoulder. But, the guests were saying what a great shot SHE took, not knowing it was actually my shot. That made me think I needed a way to post shots immediately nit days later. Didn't work for me though, so sent it back

I'm in the same boat right now. If they could produce a better eye-fi card, I would be sold. The best alternative I know of now is a Camranger or Xtreme Tether. Unfortunately that is an extra piece of equipment on the camera & is far more expensive. Running a TV stick with ghphoto2 is another option if you're tech-minded.

I use eyefi with my 5DIII and it works just fine.

I use the CF card as the primary storage and transfer those shots I like to the eyefi, then upload to my android phone. In the eyefi setup you can designate either all or just selected shots to transfer to your device (Selective Transfer). In order to transfer only those individual shots, you just use the "rate" or "protect" button.

This past weekend I took over 300 shots but only selectively transferred a couple to my android phone for posting to social media.

I have noted since upgrading my phone to the HTC-One M8 that image transfer is much faster and practically instantaneous:

yes I know how it was supposed to work, but everytime my 5 went to sleep it wouldn't reconnect. Could have been my android phone, but frustrated the hell out of me. When it worked it was great, but it mostly didn't work
