Used Canon 50mm 1.2, where are they?

Prior to the release of the NEW Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens several members of the forum forecast the demise of the Canon 50 mm 1.2 lens. It was prophesied that it would fall to $900 on the used lens market. Hmmm...doesn't seem to have happened. What am I missing? Why is the used Canon lens still considered superior to the new Sigma 1.4?

Heya,

It's not superior to the new ART from Sigma. It just has a different property, F1.2, and that's the only thing going for it.

If you really want a 50 F1.2, you can get an old legacy Canon for $200 and adapt it to EOS with a custom mount for another $100 or so. Manual focus and all, but still a great lens and very inexpensive.

Very best,

OK...so why haven't the used prices of the Canon 1.2 dropped?

People have been trying to predict the market for years, all markets. They haven't found the secret yet.

The answer, is, people are fickle, cheap and greedy.

The Canon 50 1.2 is not defunct. You have to put into context that it's still a working serviced lens with the Canon name that is modern. It's not a third party lens. It's not a legacy lens with no support and adaptation. You can't expect the "maker's" lens to be turned into a 50 F1.8 II over night just because Sigma, a third party, releases it's "better" lens that competes with it, for less cost.

Very best,

Very best,

I totally agree. Other people don't. People stated that 1.4 was essentially the same as 1.2. Obviously wrong. Enjoy your new Sigma, LOVE your Canon 1.2!

There's one being sold in the forum for $1100, that's a UA code. That's already considerable drop. They go for $1200

A few people saying something doesn't really mean much

It was prophesied that it would fall to $900 on the used lens market. Hmmm...doesn't seem to have happened.

there are very few copies of the sigma in the wild. It would take a while for this to happen. Likely people who own the 50L love the lens and are waiting to see more reviews to determine if they want to jump. Some might, some might not, too early to tell

What am I missing? Why is the used Canon lens still considered superior to the new Sigma 1.4?

This is hilarious, stating a crazy opinion like it's fact. The 50A objectively destroys the 50L in every optical measure. The 50L wins in 1.2 and maybe AF

I think with the Sigma still backordered for the forseeable future, we can't really consider it released. Once everybody who wants one, has one, it will be interesting to see

I love my 50L for it's build, consistent AF, and it's image quality around f/1.8. I'm not a fan of Sigma (just never was interested in using third party) so I don't pay attention to their offerings.

You have some answers from some people but are only interested in the direction you wanted this post to go when you trolled it, err Posted it,

The new sigma sucks, the canon 50 1.2 is clearly the better lens by any means measurable, and it is unlikely that anyone who owned such a fine lens would need to start a thread about it after spamming the sigma 50 thread to feel good about themselves.

Unsubscribed........

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.

not sure you are getting his sarcasm. Bakewell trolled the 50A release thread saying all that stuff.

this is another attempt to rile up the forum. Unfortunately people are unaware or cannot read into Bakewells intentions.

He asks a couple leading questions, then really drills it home with "Why is the used Canon lens still considered superior to the new Sigma 1.4?"

Presenting an opinion as fact to lure people into fighting.
