How large do you feel comfortable printing with the 5d?

I haven't "pushed it" with prints from my 5D, I've gotten excellent 12x18 (and 12x16 prints, so to me "pushing" is going larger, say 20x30 if I want "gallery quality" prints.

Just for a bit of perspective, though...my trusty ol' 8MP 30D has put out 12x18 prints that I've viewed with a magnifying glass with satisfaction!

How large do you feel comfortable printing with the 5D?

That's kind of a loaded question without a straight answer. A 5D image, non-cropped, is 4368x2912. Most prints are acceptable to view up close when printed at 300dpi. This would equate to a 14.5"x9.7" image, if printed straight from the camera.

If you print at half the printing resolution (150dpi), you can double the image size (29.1"x19.4"). This would be fine for an image when viewed from further away (say 20").

If you want a print that is both large and viewed at a close distance, you can resize using an interpolating software and achieve good results.

Been using the 5D with a Zeiss 50mm for a while now and still get so much pleasure taking photos with it. Something very organic about the way it captures tone and colour.

Anyway here's some shot from the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh...

I dont know if I would call it a loaded question. There are multiple answers depending on what you want for an end result, as you mentioned. I wanted to know both answers (how large you would go for how far away you view it, and right up close) and you answered those both, so exactly what I was looking for. So thanks!

I'm thinking for portraits. I don't print many photos, but if I start to do portraits I am sure people will want prints.

I've printed 16x24 canvases numerous times. They looked great.

Some great pictures to be seen here - loving them all...
I'm a new 5DC owner. Got rid of mu Fuji X-E1 and got the 5DC. My M42 lenses will be put to work later as I'm still getting used to the camera. This is my first digital full frame, so I'm playing it safe with just the 50mm 1.8 for some time.
Oh it's heavy.. for almost 2 years I've been using various mirrorless cameras, so this is a comeback to dslr as well. And now that I see the results... I should have gone this route earlier. Anyway just a few pics taken over the weekend. C&C always welcome, else thank you for viewing, and hope to post more soon.

Regards
Anand
