I have had to send gear back to "the Maker" on two occasions. Two different countries.

CDN : $210 shipped back (Calgary) serious issue (didn't fix problem)

USD: $211 shipped back (Irvine) serious issue plus fresh hotshoe and lens adjustment

Seems like Canon charges $200 for most fixes. Your experience?

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

$280ish tax included, entire new shutter assembly and 1 board on a 10d. Died at 17 000 shots. Would have been $500+ until they saw the amount of shots I'm told (they called back and gave me a lower price).

They did tell me that they have 2 standard rates. Minor and major.

So far, for the one trip to New Jersey my 20D, 17-85 IS and 70-200 IS took back in January the total is $0 (convert to your favorite local currency). :D

That doesn't include shipping TO Canon, which (IIRC) was in the neighborhood of $50 insured for the entire pile.

I had a fairly severe backfocus issue with both lenses (the 70-200 was MUCH worse) that is all better now. They even threw in a new IS unit on the 70-200, the repair sheet said it was defective (one of the chances buying used I guess).

My fondest hope is thats where it ends, but who knows...

About US$215 to have the scratched IR filter replaced on my 20D sensor.
It was, as they say, a self inflicted injury but I still wasn't a happy camper.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I've had a couple of occurences to send stuff in to them and fortuneately everything has still been under warranty.

FWIW - Calgary service center is incredibly slow. I use the Montreal one as well and they are much much faster.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I had my shutter on my 20D replaced under warranty.

However my Sigma 120-300 lens, was shipped to Japan, replaced the barrel inside, fixed the AF, and few other bits, and cost about US$300-350

About $120 to repair a lens after damage in a car accident.

The lens repair bill was drastically smaller than the bill for my personal repair bill. Although I didn't have to foot my own repair bill, and if things work out, I will be reimbursed for the Canon bill as well.

that's more than half the price of the camera...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
