Ok, so not really macro in the true sense of the word. But the 400mm f5.6 and 1.4xTCIII combo works pretty well from 15 ft away.

Nice dragonfly!
I have attached tubes to my 500mm on occasion for "Macro for Old koots that can't get on their knees easily"

Funny you should say that. I had no problem getting down on one knee today, but getting up again was another story. :o

Works well, I use 300f4 for dragons. Well done nailing the butterfly.

Lovely captures.

Mark J- The bean pole I use for stabilising the camera also comes in very handy for helping you to get up from kneeling positions :)

Nice work, lovely result. I tried my 70-300 thing but never got decent focus on any subjects.

Thanks, folks. Last time I was out shooting butterflies I tried using the 100L macro and had a rough time trying to get them in flight. Amazingly the 400 5.6 locks on faster and more accurately. The extra DOF helps out, too.

That said, my attempt with the 100L was under much less optimal light, so shooting wide open was a necessity. Light is everything.
