Decided to have a go today with my 7D + 400mm f/5.6 plus a 20mm ext tube I recently bought. This tube reduces the MFD on the 400mm from 3.5 metres to approx 2.5 metres allowing for more detail from closer range. I haven't tried it on a bird yet (couldn't get that close to one!) but a here's test shot of a Dandelion from MFD, ISO 400, 1/500 sec @ f/8:

Very nice, Mark. I bought a set of tubes, but have yet to try them.

Thanks Ian, same here, they were just gathering dust until a couple of days ago when I thought I'd try a few experiments with them. They are a useful item to carry around as they weigh very little. I don't know if you saw this thread I started about using the tubes for max reach (1820mm):

Nice one, Mike. But it's too grainy. I'd try pulling up the Masking slider a bit. :)

And there is me thinking of selling mine, but looking at some of these outstanding pictures, I am now in 2 minds.

I thought of doing that when I bought my 500/4, but am very glad I didn't. There are those times I just don't want to lug the monster around and the 400 is so easily handheld.
