Levina, the 1D cameras certainly "shine" in the AF department! I had a 1D3 body for a number of years, it was my "work horse" when it came to BIF, sports, all that jazz!

But I'm still quite happy that the 5D does as well as it does in the AF department, and I'm glad I've held onto it!

Tony, I love my 5D. It is one camera that will stay with me till it dies.
I am thinking of upgrading from the 1D II N though. Not sure if going to a 1D III is worth it, but a used 1D IV is still quite expensive. Decisions...

Here are some shots with my new 28-90 III.

I know it's a cheap kit lens, but I wanted that range for a walk around.

So far I am not upset about spending the money!

Today I replaced the CF card slot. Doing the job was not that bad. The tutorial was a super help!

While I was in there I opened the camera further and checked the fuse - turns out the fuse is good. After reassembling the camera it still wont power up. I will attempt to check the power distribution circuit. My first thought was maybe a bad battery,so I put the grip on from from my good body - same results. Checked the memory battery, shows 3.1 volts - good battery.

Any ideas? Is there a single power distribution board that can be checked? I toyed with the idea of opening my good body and swapping out a board or two. Then I smacked myself, lol! Dont want to risk having 2 dead 5D bodies.

Forgot to mention,no signs of water damage inside unit.

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

...

All the battery contacts inside the camera are clean and shiny?
The mechanism that power down the camera when the CF door is opend is working?
All cable connectors are full inserted, few millimeters away from correct position could result in non working camera - had this several times.

Thanks for the input.

I was able to determine the PCB that has the fuse is getting power - thats how I checked the fuse. Put one test lead on ground (a place on the chassis) and the other test lead to each side of the fuse - had 8 volts. I saw that there are 2 tiny micro switches - one for the battery door and one for the CF card door. The switches seem to function properly, but the ribbons for both are hidden, impossible to ohm them out to make sure their working. When I get home this evening from work I will look more. I triple checked that the ribbons are fully pushed in - but I did bugger up one of the clips for the first ribbon I removed. I could tell how exactly the clips released the ribbons - I was trying to push the ribbon lock tab down in a sliding motion, but should have lifted it instead. I still locks the ribbon, but I cant confirm 100% the integrity of the connection. I may have to replace that board, will call Canon today for price abd availability. If its not too expensive I will get it.

Great shots, Rolfe!
That lens is doing a good job for you. Where were you able to find the lens?
I don't know if they are no longer being made, or are just hard to find.
Glad you are still enjoying your 5D ..... what is that other "expensive" hobby?
Joe

Question. I want to buy a used 5Dc as a backup. The prices seem very reasonable. What is the typical shutter actuation life on it? I would hate to drop $500 or $600 on one and the shutter is way past its life expectancy and have to drop another $300 (?) to repair it. My old 30D had about 20K actuations when the shutter died and it cost me more than the camera was worth to repair it.

sorry to hear. My 30D lasted well into the hundred thousand mark (before I sold it). The 5Dc is my backup or for dual body scenarios, it's also my beater body that I use to rack up the shutter.

The FPS is not exactly fast, so it acts as a rev limiter ;)

I have no clue how many actuations I have on mine, and it's simply a gamble. I've bought two of these and both have been winning gambles...... heck, I even wet clean my 5Dc, made it worse before I figured how to make it better, but that's a different story.

great camera if you're ok without the bells and whistles. If you have fast glass, then even low light will be ok. Buying used is a bit of a gamble, and so far, I'm 10/10 or something to that effect :D

Thanks for that. For sure, it'll be a gamble. I'm just trying to get a feel of what the average shutter life will be.

I recall looking at the estimated lifespan a long time ago and I remember that, at the least, it was in the low 6-figures. To be frank, I saw the number, concluded that it wasn't something that I'd have to think about for a long time and so I promptly forgot the number.

There was a shutter life DB for a bunch of cameras, not sure how accurate it is:
