I actually don't own one but I'm going to some places where I just don't want to lug my 5D iii. I want something "good" and it doesn't have to be pocket sized. I'm not fixated on any particular make or configuration but there sure are a LOT of choices out there. I've done lots of research but I've learned there's nothing like experience so I'm throwing it out there so you share your real world experience with me. I cycle and am adding some hiking/moderate climbing to that so I can comfortably carry a G1S for example in a bike pack so that's the likely size limit.

So--what do you use when you aren't lugging a bag with your gear?

My Samsung S4G does a fair job when my back has told me to leave my gear at home. But it has the usual problem with most point-and-shoots - extreme shutter lag that makes it impossible to capture a specific moment. I also have an Olympus TG2 with ISO up to 6400, an optical zoom, and almost no shutter lag. It also takes pictures under water.

Postprocessing: DxOLabs 5, DxO Viewpoint 3, Paint Shop Pro 2021
Speak softly and carry a big zoom.

Heya,

I have a Canon S100. It collects dust. I picked up a junk XSi as my "point and shoot" for $180 and I just share lenses with it from my other cameras, including vintage manual lenses. I would rather walk around with a big, bulky old dSLR than use a point & shoot at this point, but that's just preference as I enjoy my lenses, and P&S's just cannot do what my F1.4 lenses can do.

Very best,

I used to carry a Nikon P300 around and would still use it for work coaching if it was working (I think it took too many falls), but these days I'm always carrying around either my EOS M or Fuji X-E1. They're so small and light that you hardly notice they're on you and the IQ is top notch.

Canon S95. The wife uses it far more than I do, but it's nice to have along in case the DSLR takes a crap. Pretty good image quality, RAW, manual settings if you wish. Fairly good low-light capability.

If I was to get another one now, it would have a longer zoom.

SX700?... if you don't need RAW.

I had an iPhone 4s but moved to a Trac phone last December. I'm retired and I ended up resenting the ongoing monthly cost for a few calls and texts. I actually still have and use it like an iTouch; it isn't bad at all in a pinch. If I hike to the top of an Adirondack mountain, I'm not coming back with my 5d iii but I definitely want something better than an iPhone. Now, obviously smartphones are likely to virtually replace point and shoot cameras in a couple of years and I may get another (I'm a closet geek and love tech) but not just yet!

My wife has a powershot 115is that we use regularly and then we are looking at a waterproof camera in the next week or so.

I still have my G11, it's always taken great outside shots. I have been known to carry it going to town shopping, usually the times you see something is when you don't have a camera so I make sure I do at times. I think these DSLR's have a way of spoiling you with the best shots.

But in all honesty I don't use it much anymore.
