Quite a large lens then

Took mine out for a test drive during my lunch break today:

looks pretty sharp all around the frame!.. nice contrast too...

You know, the foliage reflected in the window in the lower right corner of DCS00021 above looks about like foliage shot directly in the corner of a 17-40L @f8.

Would like to see a side by side sample image with this and the 16-35 II!

Thanks! Not sure I have much more up my sleeve though lol. Houston isn't exactly a photogenic city (though it is getting better), and I don't travel as much as I'd like to.

Congrats! I have a request: Since you also own a Nikon 14-24, the a7R should be the perfect platform for comparing it to the 16-35mm f/4L IS. My wish/hope is that the 16-35 f/4 will have comparable (dare I wish for better?) performance to the 14-24mm at landscape apertures. Anyway, I hope you'll have a look at both and let us know what you think.

Unfortunately, I sold the 14-24. It was sitting around collecting dust and haven't been using it. I have on loan a Nikon 16-35 f4 VR but, it definitely is no where near the performance of it's bigger brother.

Ah OK, thanks for the reply. I'm sure there will be someone with the two lenses and a7R to make a comparitive analysis.

Well, looking at MTFs it may be too close to tell. I got the lens delivered yesterday but, haven't had a chance to open it yet. I'm so backed up with editing at the moment! Grrr!

Here are some test shots with the new lens. Nothing crazy, just from around the 'hood after some MFA:

16mm, f/5.6, 1/80, ISO 400. 100% crop has that beetle razor sharp! The performance at the edges is excellent, only getting a little soft at extreme corners (which could be caused by being outside the DOF; more testing needed).

Great examples! Could you please do some 16mm @ f8 or f11, in original image size when you get a chance?
