50mm 1.2 DOF at 2m = 0.11 m
70mm 2.8 DOF at 2m = 0.13 m

Not a huge difference IMHO.

^ I totally agree that the DOF can be the same given optimal location and the ability to move around and frame.
Unfortunately, for me, I am never in a studio and often don't have the ability to frame many shots other than my 'foot zooming' and some post process cropping.
What I mean is while I think a zoom would be convenient, I like my thin DOF as well as my working distance.
My 50L is quickly becoming my most used lens but I don't always have the ability to back up, as I would need to zoomed to 70mm at f2.8

even with same DOF, it doesnt mean same background blur.... 50L is in a completely different league. When DOF or low light isnt a big deal, the flexibility of the 24-70 shows up big time. 24 is borderline ultrawide, and 70 is borderline formal portrait.

I think my kit will be this:

EF 16-35 4L IS
EF 24-105L
Σ 50 Art

Maybe rent a 135L.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Mainly for my vacation, I'll be shooting landscapes and people.

I also shoot cars, so the reach will be nice there, however, not necessary right now.

The IS will def help indoors if I end up doing anything architecture wise.

I really am excited about the Siggy 50 Art.

What's my most used lens!?

Can't answer that because I use them all, now. The 85L was my least used and most expensive lens. Good bye! I had it boxed up for a month, waiting to BE SURE. Did a wedding, several portrait sessions, etc. Didn't miss it. So I sold it on eBay for $1850.

16-35L 2.8 II for real estate. I shoot houses for a realtor. The homes are 250-750k. Don't need TS. Don't trust my eyes, so I don't like MF.

50L 1.2 for portrait / wedding and low light.

24-70L 2.8 II for events, portrait sessions for kids. For when there is light and I only want one lens. Very expensive, amazing IQ, ridiculously sharp. Amazing tool!!!!
Again, this zoom is.... expensive. But I originally had the 85L II 1.2, it too is amazing, but specialized. Do not miss it. Too expensive to be specialized, FOR ME. Not to mention, it's heavy.

135L for long portrait and sport

So thrilled right now. My 70D and 50L is my 85L. With my zoom on the mark III, great kit.

I proudly have nothing new to report. :) My wallet is safe.
Although I have not tried a copy of the 16-35 IS yet, the store is about 2.5 hours one way.
My wallet is indeed very safe. Loving this warm weather and using my 100L more and more. :D
TGIF, not wait..... it's Tuesday. :(

With the addition of the 16-35 f/4 IS, my transition from 3 to 5 lenses is complete!

16-35L f/4 IS
24L II
50L
100L Macro
70-200L f/2.8 II

The new ultra-wide zoom is remarkable and adds some great capability to my kit, as I love shooting landscapey type stuff.

Big question for me now is deciding what my travel kit will be. I've been happy using the 24/50 for this; I used that duo in Italy, and it got me shots of a lifetime, but there were times I could have used wider. Enter the 16-35 and it's Image Stabilization! I think the 16-35/50L would make for an excellent, minimal travel kit.

Personally, I would leave it at home. That's a sweet kit.
