I want to buy a new cheap lens and I'm stuck between this lens and the Nifty Fifty - suggestions?

Well, i LOVE the pancake.

i've shot on cropped, APSH, FF sensor: 40mm it's strange, unique range, roughly halfway in the middle between 35 and 50.
for interesting portraits (the above is with the 1D4), cool even in street photo, and landscapes.
so small, u put it into the bag and it's like having only the body.
AF is fast, even more useful in case u shoot video.

the 50 it's really bright for the deal-price, and i've seen many great shots from, but it looks too-much-plasticky to me: the cheap mount could be easily broken..

CONS. IMHO, issues of the pancake:
- in low light often i got OOF shots.
- Lack of range distance it's boring.
- strange MF, focus ring is so thin.
Last 2 lines i have to admit, are due to the fact the lens is really small :D

^^

Totally agree on the strange MF part. Seems like you twist the ring forever and it barely changes focus. I rarely MF with this lens because of that.

Overall though very handy.

I was out last weekend and thought I only had my TS-E 17 and my Fisheye with me, but wanted some longer reach for the lightning shots I posted earlier.

Then I realized, I use the Pancake instead of the body cap on my 6D when it's in my backpack, so I actually had 3 lenses with me. It's so small, I forgot I had it with me!

^^^Funny story!! About the manual focusing, it's just like the fuji-x system, so weird..

I bought the 50mm F1.8 II and the 40mm F2.8.

I still have the 40mm F2.8. It lives on an XSi.

The 50mm F1.8 II went to another home.

I cannot tolerate the 50's poor autofocus, poor speed, noise, and rubbish build quality for something that gets used daily (it's optically very good, but every other property about it is shoddy). The 40 F2.8 just has everything. I wish it was faster than F2.8, but it's so good, so small, and does everything so well that I forgive it's slower aperture (considering it's a $130 lens, and not a $500 lens like the 35 F2 IS that I shoot on my main body).

The 50 F1.8 II couldn't keep up with kids. But the 40 F2.8 can.

I feel the same way. I have both and I think the 50 will be hitting the market soon. The focus hunting drives me crazy, and it's so noisy. People ask me if my camera is broken when they hear it.

Like you said, optically, it's good, but so is the 40mm. I'd rather use the pancake because it has more benefits and better quality overall.

I bought a 50 a week or so again, and now that best buy has the 40 back in stock i might go swap it out today. I love both and have owned both but the build of the 40 is much more desirable.

Their having a Canada's day sale right now! I know you get an additional $18 off at futureshop and $16 off at bestbuy but both total adds up to $143.99. I'm considering picking one up as well :)!

or the operator? Could it be that? :D:D:D

On a serious note the light was very good just before sunset and that child (my friend's daughter) has a very expressive face with big blue eyes, it helps.
