Will point and shoots soon be extinct?

If you look at tweens who grew up having iphones most of their conscious lives, a huge chunk of their social interaction happens online. Not in the real world.

Only the old people take pictures for family and friends. The party doesn't happen unless there's pictures on instagram proving how cool it is while the party is happening.

If one thinks it's a waste of time to take a couple of selfies instead of enjoying life, think of the time before photography where you had to pose for a painter for a week.

That doesn't make those who don't take that approach any less valid. There are still plenty of young people who don't participate in that fashion. Their photos are still just as relevant despite the fact that they are shared with a more limited audience.

My personal preference as to point and shoots/carry around cameras: As soon as iPhones became somewhat decent in image quality, I stopped caring for a point and shoot. While the IQ of a point and shoot is likely better than an iPhone, I don't think the IQ outweighs the inconvenience of carrying a p&s. I'd rather use an iPhone for out and about photos and a DSLR for a photoshoot. I've never been one that needs DSLR quality photos for my nights out with friends. My .02

Looking for a Samsung Galaxy S4 myself, I plan on selling my seldom-used point-and-shoot. Although my P&S will surely have better IQ, options, zoom, etc the photos I've seen with my cousin's Galaxy are pretty amazing...and what's more--I always have my cell phone on me. Even a 1DX and 800L is of little use when it is locked away at home!

I thought that cameras on phones were, actually, point & shoot cameras. Isn't any digital camera without interchangeable lenses a point & shoot? Or do I have my definition wrong?

If, as I believe, camera phones are indeed point & shoots, then I do not think they will be going extinct for many, many decades.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (scaled down version of its big brother) which takes pretty decent photos and video. Actually it's a very nice phone all round. I'm an Android fan by the way. What it lacks though is control. My little Canon S95 smacks my Samsung for image quality.

I bought a Nokia Lumia 1020 about 8 months ago just because of the camera on it. It takes some really good photos considering they are on a phone. The 1020 even has some manual control on it. I've accidentally lost my point and shoot camera, but really haven't bothered looking for it since I don't really need it anymore. There are times I wish I at least had a point and shoot though as there are some quirks with the Lumia camera I haven't figured out how to compensate for. Not to mention, I can also get optical zoom with a P&S.
