I use a card reader. Much cheaper to replace than worn out USB pins in camera body.

Camera USB to PC & EOS Utility.

Cheaper than replacing broken/bent CF pins in the body from continuously removing/replacing memory card ;)

via the camera USB or via the memory card reader (taking memory card out and into the reader)?

Quick and effective image file downloading begins with an USB card reader. (external link) Then the versatile Downloader Pro (external link) program from Breeze Systems is used to automate the file transfer. Downloader Pro can be configured to create folders for each project so files are easily located.

Cable, my old reader is a bit slow. I use Bridge as my little helper to decide which and where and with what names.

Card readers avoid wear and tear on camera connectors and free the camera for more picture taking. Transfers from cars readers also can be quicker than plugging a cable into a camera.

To my main computer > card reader
If i'm out and about > SD card into laptop or Card reader (for CF cards but I don't use them much if I have my laptop with me)

wow no one so far uses the USB connected to the camera... (well i do but have a reader now). was just curious how many people do this....

I have a reader but rarely use it. I use the Canon utility to transfer images to my laptop via USB; preview them in Faststone - delete the for sure non-keepers; move the remainder to my external hardrive and import them into LR.
