Hi everyone,

I recently (about 2 months ago) purchased a Canon 85mm f/1.8 through B&H and have been planning to use it in an upcoming wedding shoot at the end of August. Lately I've been noticing significant issues with missed focus, particularly front focus. Obviously the problem is most pronounced wide open, but it's even missing focus at f/2.8, especially with distant subjects. At first I attributed the issue to my technique, but I've since tested the lens extensively on static subjects and it does seem to be consistently front-focusing. The focus issue only manifests with phase-detect AF, images taken with live-view contrast-detect AF are spot-on.

Has anyone had experience with sending a poorly focusing lens in to Canon? Did they repair it, and if so, how long did it take? I assume I wouldn't get it back in time for the event in 5 weeks if I sent it in tomorrow.

Both of the photos below were shot at f/2, the top one in live view and the bottom through the viewfinder, AF mode was one shot

I took a little while to figure out how to post photos from the new site but I figured it out.

Go to an image you want to post like normal. Then go to the arrow that curves to the right, in between the download icon (arrow pointing down at a line) and the favorite icon (star). Then you will select the BB Code like normal.

I have an EF 85mm f/1.8. On my 50D MFA +6 set for this lens. On my 20D and 700D it's spot on.

Sometimes it's not just the lens but the combination of lens and camera.

My first 85/1.8 went back to Adorama with focusing issues and the second is much better. My 50/1.8, I didn't catch the focusing issue until after the return period so I had to send that one to Canon. Turn around time was about 2 weeks after they replaced a focusing module.

If only my camera supported microadjustment...I think that would "fix" the issue. Time for a 6D I guess ;)
