I am doing a lot more portraits now, My experience has been the 85L is crisp/sharp even wide open. You won't get that same level of sharpness with the 50L. BUT, 50L has more of that "dreamy" look to the images wide open. I know that doesn't qualify as a technical assessment but that's the best way I can describe the difference between the two. Julian

I am doing a lot more portraits now, I would say 85L is a little more "magical". But not quite as versatile FL and it's bulkier and heavier. I've only had the 50L for a couple weeks and I actually use it more than 85L (maybe because it's newer to me). I actually brought 35L 50L and 85L to a boudoir shoot and the 85L was the least used.
