If your shooting youth sports the 70-200 is fantastic because you normally can get close to the field. I just bought my 300 a few months ago and I love it but I'm going to sell the lens because most of my work is done in the studio and it's a lot of money tied up just to shoot my sons sports. Since I have had the 300 I never took the 70-200 out of my bag it's that nice of a lens.

i really like the 300 2.8, but it is limiting. for up and down field sports, since you only have the players in your "window" for a small portion of the field. I tend to have the 300 on one body and the 70-200 on the other.

I would probably suggest the 70-200 over the 300 as a first purchase.

Most people who shoot field sports use both at the same time. One camera with a 300mm on it and another with a 70-200 on it. I would go with a 70-200 first because it has good use in a wider variety of sports. 300 has good reach, but the 70-200 is great for indoor stuff as well.
