Dragged the lens over to Italy, and despite futile attempts at catching swallows in flight (anyone who can manage this, you have my ultimate respect), had a lot of fun with more static wildlife - all of the below at 600mm (with varying degrees of cropping) and taken with the 100d - to see just how light I can get the package to be. All in all I'm pretty thrilled with performance - I've had the lens since before the firmware fix was announced and haven't sent it back as I don't see the need.

i did it with common swift :D
quite similar, so small and damn fast! devilish little birds, always changing direction..
yet with the 300. of course the AF of is faster, anyway, i got around 90% OOF.
probably a gimbal head will help tracking 'em.
BTW is shorter, so i had to crop heavily.

A simple shot @600mm....I really love the bokeh this lens produces

Well, in this instance I think that the distance between the subject and the background is the main cause of the solid background.

I do think the bokek on my Tamron is better at 600mm than my 100-400 with a 1.4x TC. TCs, I think, are only made to be good in the focal plane, and are not designed to preserve bokeh. This is another reason why I want a fully-functional EOS body with a much smaller sensor than APS-C; you can get all of the bokeh and AF benefits of faster, shorter lenses. When I use my Tamron 90mm f/2.8 on my Pentax Q with an adapter, the bokeh is very, very nice, much nicer than on my 6D with the 100-400 or Tamron. Using the Q with an adapter is very difficult, however, from an operational standpoint unless you use a tripod, Hoodman or similar loupe, and a wireless remote. A 3x to 5x crop-sensor EOS would revolutionize focal-length-limited and/or hand-held telephotography. Don't forget; even though you are shooting with a smaller sensor, you are shooting at a much lower ISO because you are using a faster lens, or are omitting TCs! A 70-200 2.8L II would be awesome on such a camera, as would a 135 or 200mm 2L.

If you are in a situation where you can turn on the focus limiter the AF is pretty darn quick. I shoot surfing, so the action is always more than 15 meters out and the AF is better in all regards to the 100-400 I had

That's true, but I always forget to switch it back, and most of the things I shoot are less than 15 meters away, and if haven't made this same mistake recently, the subject is gone before I figure out what went wrong.

Nice shot - flowers I can not get close to and cropping for kind of macro . I have reached the point where I seldom even carry the 180 macro - just the 70-200 II and the 2X III . A lot of people don't like the IQ when cropped - but they look good to me .
