Sorry for not posting a bigger before pic. I'm a complete LR newbie. How can I make a copy of the original un-edited raw file?

Don't do that (make a copy of the Raw file)!

To get a "Before", you can make a Virtual Copy of the original (right-click on the shortcut and you will see that option), then with the Virtual Copy active/selected, in the Develop module click the Reset button to go to the un-edited version, then Export it to a jpeg, and you can post it here!

Excellent, Chris, and some very nice processing there! Shots like this can make folks believe in the "digital darkroom" of Raw processing!!

Hey, awesomeshots, thanks for the contribution!

It would help us to appreciate the work you've done if you could post a bigger "Before" shot together with a bigger "After"!

I blame that on photobucket.
But if you click on the image it'll take you to the photobucket with better size and resolution. :)

^^you have to post it here - don't make us do the work for you! ;)
Most often than not - links get broken over time so it's best if you post it here.

Alright, you guys win. ;)

Unfortunately I won't be able post too much about the process because once I do the basic exposure adjustments I use about ten different brushes to fine tune the picture.

Here is the before

I'm up for another one -- a personal favorite.

This is a shot of my grandson, who at 16 has been through way too much trauma, including a heart condition with three open heart surgeries and the death of his father at a young age and other things that have piled up on him over the years, and yet he has continued to deal with things in a way that makes me very proud.

Anyway, he was with me on a visit to the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge not far from where I live in Washington State, and I shot this picture of hime with the 5D Classic and the 16-35 f/2.8 lens:

QUOTED IMAGE

Pretty much a snapshot, but at closer examination, I felt that it revealed something about his character, so I cropped it and provided some Lightroom Basic development -- here is the crop with no sharpening applied. I actually brought down the exposure a bit from the original to bring out some highlights, and applied some additional highlight recovery, then did some fill light and brightness to bring out the midtones, contrast and clarity to balance things out:

QUOTED IMAGE

Here's a screenshot of my Basic settings:

QUOTED IMAGE

Then I did some RAW sharpening, which really gave some clarity to the detail:

A screenshot of my sharpening settings:

Finally, I decided that a Grayscale Conversion could be quite interesting. I switched to Grayscale and began tweaking the color channels. Lightroom integrates this very nicely into the interface, and you can be surprised at how much differennce it can make to tweak those channels. Here's the final product. Even though closely cropped, this image prints great as an 8x10 photo (I also adjusted the crop a bit):

Here's the screenshot of the Grayscale settings:

Tony,
Great project and the background info you provided endears you to the young man's story. I like it.
Thanks for sharing this one.
Morgan

Morgan, what can I say? Wow, it's been, gosh, 5 years since I took this photo, he'll turn 22 next month and has now been through five open heart surgeries, and yet this photo stands out showing his heart and his soul, thanks, Morgan, for jerking another tear!
