Yep, you can sure see it after a 20 second exposure n the review on the screen. You need dark skies though, and Central Oregon is blessed with some of the best. If you have dark skies, it is clearly visible to the naked eye.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

You wouldn't use black to white, but rather, black to transparent. So set the opacity at the end of the gradient to none. Black to white will create a darker top and brighter bottom, while black to transparent will simply darken the top, and leave the bottom as is.

A gradient map is a really subtle way of desaturating the image, but in a way that makes it look cool and dramatic. I use it to keep things looking a little more dramatic. It's the very bottom right adjustment in the quick toolbar (the one where you can quickly choose which adjustment you want) when you scroll over it in photoshop.

In the edit of your photo in that link, I used a gradient map a little.

That's the one I liked most.

I tried the gradient map, but I couldn't find a result I liked so I stuck with this. It's the black to transparent.

I'm going to have to do this more often in photos with a washed out sky. I did pick up a better filter kit over the weekend, so hopefully that helps with the RAW images as well. This shot just seemed a little lost (to me) due to the haze from the Washington fires and really washing the sky out.

Thanks for the tip(s)! (And sorry to those who've had to look at the same photo a few times over now on the last two pages)

Not exactly fast moving birds in flight or anything, but tracked this guy while he was descending yesterday. AI Servo f9 (wanted to make sure I got the whole thing in focus) 1/1000th and iso 500 (had it on auto ISO)

Well I'm glad it worked out for you! The only thing I might need to add--you mentioned you have Lee Filter--I'd try to use that instead of the gradient technique. I don't have any sort of ND filter, so I need to use the graduated gradient technique--or use the black card technique (external link). But using the graduated gradient technique can give you some weird artifacts in the sky if you take it too far. Probably due to dynamic range or something. Not 100% sure. But if the sky is brought down too much, it gets blotchy.

Glad it was helpful for you. I'm actually very thankful of the help from others; learning new post processing techniques I didn't know about.

I literally just picked up the LEE filter on Saturday; I wish I had it for the trip as the gradient filter would have made a world of difference in helping tone the sky better for this shot. I had a threaded gradient filter, but it was a cheap one and is a bit harsh for this type of lighting. I bought it to try a gradient, which ultimately pushed me towards buying the LEE kit (I actually donated the screw-on to a buddy with a 6D/24-105 after I bought the LEE Kit).

Thanks again for your help! I actually am happy to have fine tuned this photo as I purchased some canvas print deals on Living Social and want to use this photo for one of them.
