I think the one I am shooting with is slightly sharper at f8 but it is a minimal difference you can easily shoot at any aperture.

Jul 02, 2014 03:18 | #23 ^Nice photos anyway Another one, flying (70% crop): one more (I just love the 300 f4 usm bokeh): Moon shot w/ 2x TC wide open f/8.0 pixel peeping, 100% crops out of Canon 550D (18Mpix) without any sharpening. Apertures f4, f5.6 and f7.1. Not much difference.. Canon

Most likely it is just loosened AF stator or dirty opto encoder. Does it even try to AF (AF mechanism moving, hunting etc?) " http://www.flickr.com/photos/70718847@N02/

Jul 02, 2014 12:49 | #25 Ok, I have disassembled two 300 4L's and those are pretty simple. Only thing that requires attention is not to break those ribbon cables. But if you can do with manual focus, there is no problem Canon

Aug 02, 2014 21:32 | #27 I just bought a 300/4 non-IS. Hopefully I can add to this thread when it arrives. My sole worry is it if it needs repair. Cannot wait to try it with my 1.4x II and 2x II. Those sample shots are amazing!

Oct 11, 2014 04:14 | #29 How does it compare to its big brother, EF 400 5.6L USM? I thing 300 4L has really a slight edge. Some fine textures has little bit more detail w/ 300 F4. However, these both are super sharp! Test setup: Manfrotto 055 tripod + 501 head. Canon 60D body, mirror lockup and self timer used. Manual focus using 100% liveview screen to get best possible focus. Canon
