so if you had to choose between:

70-200 f2.8 V2 or the 135 f2 what would you choose? Mostly shooting portraits and cars

I would vote 135L unless you need the ability to zoom quickly. Otherwise, you can't beat the 135L at f/2 IMO :D

I have both. I sold the 135L only to buy it again. I thought I didn't need the 135L after I got the 70-200ii. It turns out, I like the 135L for its weight and size. I purchased it again and now I hardly use the 70-200ii. However, if you want to shoot low light often, the 70-200ii would be better for the IS. I tried shooting portraits right after the sun sets below shutter speed 160. I got a lot of blurry shots. Just my 2 cents.

As long as you can keep the shutter speed up I'd vote for the 135. The whoe 1/focal length rule doesnt' always work out with the 135. It can be a bit of a diva at times. I try to stay above 1/320 with it as much as possible.

Here's one of my latest uses of the 135L. I love this lens!

Almost, if not, right at MFD @ 2.0. This lens is such a beast! Amazing photos in this thread.

Received my brand new 135L today... It is about the third or forth time I have owned it, and plan on keeping it this time around...

However...

Completely defective on arrival. At first glance, I notice an inch long scratch on the front element... OK, so not exactly the best first impression... Then I mount the lens on my 5D3 and when it goes to AF, sounds like the AF motor from the 50 1.8... Screechy, screw motor type sound. I have had dozens of Canon lenses with USM, including multiple 135L's... This was NOT normal. I never heard such a noise, actually.

So of course, it is going back... Common trend for me it seems and brand new Canon lenses... Not sure if it is Canon shipping poor quality lenses, or UPS is playing kickball along the shipping route with the package... Not sure. But it really is frustrating. If it is not decentering issues, the USM motor squeaks... Or the IS does not work properly... Or scratches on the front element... (Seriously, I have had three now I believe... This one, a 70-200 II and a 35L I believe it was. All brand new).

Here is hoping the next one is OK... On a side note, first time I have seen a "UC" date code... It also had the brand new box Canon is shipping these lenses in.
