The Sammy is really THAT good, eh?!

I have the sammy and 16-35, and dont think it will replace the sammy either. sammy is WIDE, feels considerably wider. I really like the sam 14, but the starbursts are UGLY, and it cant do 100mm filters, which is a huge issue for me.

I could replace the sam with the 16-35, but giving up that wide angle is pretty hard to do.... I might do it for the sake of simplicity.

Nice! You're not helping... ;)

I'm on a waiting mode until the 7DII is announced with the "expected" revolutionary sensor change and the "inevitable" FF model refresh...

If that happens, "old" sensor tech 6Ds will probably sell for under $1k lightly used.
I'll snatch one of those then...

i did see some video about a prototype sensor they were working on (the one with the fireflie in moonlight) always thought we would see it with the next full frame but it would make sense to debut it with the new 7D too, hope we see it! but then again when you see the new sensor you probably want to get that instead of the 6D lol

This photo is amazing, and very inspiring! I'm now trying to wrap my head around how the galaxy is physically laid out, vs. what we see here from Earth. The arc shape is tripping me up, because I normally just see the galaxy as a streak across the sky.

Star photo quality-wise, are you experiencing any coma with this lens?

thanks Matthew :)

i think everyone's already answered your questions lol, tbh i didn't pay as close attention in regards to coma but nothing really stood out either, but i'd trust Rob on this one :)

edit: have a look at this comparison review, it holds up pretty well

I've just done one like that could be that shot. Check my Flickr or 500px.

I done some test shots last week with the 16-35, it's on but some coma in the corners etc, won't be my goto astro lens. Won't replace my samyang 14mm.

Yep; it's not the one I was thinking of, but it gets the idea across. Here's a link to your version (external link). Well done.

So my 16-35mm F/4L USM IS lens arrived yesterday! I took it out for a 15 min walk with my friend to test it out, love the feel of the lens, sharpness seemed superb in camera and thought the world of it!
Came home and uploaded a few shots into Adobe Photoshop CS6 and felt that the images were soft...even at centre frame!

Is this just me or have I received a bad copy of the lens?

You can check out the full resolution images here:
(just hit the zoom button twice through and it will open to full image)

On a crop sensor camera like my 7D which would you prefer more for use as a general walk around lens and for taking pics of cars in the pits between rounds at drag races, the 16-35 F4 IS or the sigma 18-35 F1.8? From my experience most the time in the pits my 35 F2 IS isn't wide enough to get the whole car in frame thus why I'm considering these two instead of a 24-70 at the moment.

Either the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 or Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS make more sense. Pick whichever one better fits your needs -- more range and IS, or a faster f/1.8 "prime-like" maximum aperture. They are each less expensive than the 16-35 f/4L IS, too.

Had it and sold it(17-55), after getting the 35 F2 I preferred the faster lens and didn't miss having the ability to zoom for most things. Which the more I think about it that is pushing me towards the sigma 18-35 to have F1.8 just sigmas quality control always worries me.

If 2.8 is too slow then not sure f4 will be good for you!

Well my thinking is, I used the 17-55 primarily for low light/indoor photos so for those times I'd still have the 35 F2 IS but, for mid day pics I'd regain the zoom ability by having the 16-35 and this way both lenses would still have a specific use and reason for being in my kit and I could always add a 24 IS or a 24L II down the road or just go 18-35 and have F1.8 threw the whole range.

Sold the 16-35 II and the new lens will arrive soon. There was a long time I was waiting for UWA with IS in Canon line product.

IS is better for me than 2.8 when a lens can't do both (except 70-200II). But 2.8 is that slow too... Primes are welcome but my back can't hold them for now :(
