Sometimes on my 50D camera when I push the shutter button[after 1/2 way] the camera takes a long time to take the picture or won't take the picture at all. Do I have some setting set wrong on the camera? this is a new camera to me. I hope there is nothing wrong with the camera as I bought it used.

What happens after it takes a long time to take the picture? Is the pic over exposed as if the shutter speed is too slow? How often does this happen? What mode are you using, for example green box, manual, program, av, tv? A little more info would be helpful. I'm sure people here can help.

Are you trying to shoot in dark environments with the kit lens?

Yes to me that sounds as if you are in a situation where the lens is struggling/failing to achive focus. In single shot AF if the lens hasn't got focus the camera will not fire the shot. It will carry on trying to focus after you try firing the shutter, so it may eventually get focus, which are the times it would fire after a delay.

If you are shooting in bright light and you are getting the issue after you have got the AF confirm, or in servo mode AF then you may have a dirty contact in the switch. It may be possible to clean the switch using Isoproply alcohol. Which is used to flush the switch. There are guides to this that can be found with a google search. If that fails you may need the switch replacing.

Same thing started happening to the 40D I bought used about a year ago, I tried different settings...sunny, cloudy, shade etc...I adjust the depth of field, shutter speed etc. but those don`t work. I shoot stationary subjects most of the time but it is beginning to get annoying, I`ve even been thinking of changing to the 6D, I want a FF camera so I`m reading up as much as I can, no decisions yet. Isoproply alcohol eh....I have no idea how to say THAT in Japanese so I may just take the camera to a chain shop, show them the problem and hope they`ll have an idea about what I mean....`course they may try talking me into buying a new camera too....but honestly, peer pressure hasn`t really played a role in my life for decades so that won`t work on me. Still, I`d like to know what`s going on since I have another 40D that doesn`t do that...the first I bought new when they came out so I`ve had it since then. So if it comes down to spending money to get it fixed, I may just spend that cash on a new body....depending on cost of course.

As I think about it....for mine, it seems worse when I hold the camera vertically....it happens less when I hold it horizontally....maybe I got gremlins living in there or something.

It could be suffering from the well known Canon sticky shutter button syndrome.

I did it a few years back and used an eye dropper. Make sure you use very high grade isopropyl and give it a lot of time to evaporate before tilting the camera. Make sure that the shutter button is the lowest point of the camera. I attached mine to a tripod and let it air dry for over an hour. Shutter fixed and no drips in window.

My 40D is currently suffering from this. Good to find this thread.

Get the 99% pure. It evaporates very quickly.

Definitely make sure the camera is tilted forward so that the top LCD window isn't the lowest point. If you don't do this, alcohol will get into that top LCD and cause issues with the display. Been there, done that...
