I don't see why being "in business" should be the high-water mark.

People tear down others when they, themselves, are lacking. Being "in business" doesn't make it any more or less palatable.

It is stupid to pull something like that while you are in the business related to the field because it has far more chance of coming back to bite you exceptionally hard.

My day job is in software development. If I bad mouth a photographer, and word gets around photography community/industry that I did something that low, then it is rather unlikely to have much of an impact on my career overall. I'll keep getting jobs in programming, and drawing contracts from around the globe.

However, if I were a fully time photographer working in a community, and people got onto it that I was a hack of a photographer and less than pleasant to work with, then my income is then on the line.

You've missed my point.

I'm not saying it's not a stupid thing to do.

But what's happening here is hypocritical. People are being critical of someone who's being critical of someone else by being critical, and by saying that he shouldn't be critical.

Kinda' makes the head spin.

Are you referring to the criticism of his actions or his photos? Or both?

as i said above, it's about context. In the context of an anonymous (if you want it to be) message board that caters to professionals and avid hobbyists, criticism takes on one form. In some fashion it is virtually a requirement for every post.

out in the wild, wild world web, it is something completely different. To me it isn't even in the same ballpark. Nothing said here should impact anyone's livelyhood or public persona.

There have actually been some positive things come out of this thread (for me anyway). Earlier on someone mentioned Meg might be the focus of this guy's rant, and then someone else pointed out it was Lisa. I took a bit of time to look at their websites and must say they are both truly inspiring photographers. I likely wouldn't have stumbled across their work without this entertaining little thread.

100% in agreement with groundloop! These two professionals are producing inspirational, aspirational images, which I suspect also elicit envy. (Or in my case, awe!)

As a hobbyist I read a lot of threads here about the lack of respect photographers and their skills are shown in the greater community. In my experience professionals don't act (publicly) in this manner, as the profession as a whole is denigrated.

Yelp unfiltered the review - so kind of them. I now have a 3 star rating thanks to his fake review.

Not that there's anything funny about your whole ordeal, but I found his 5 star review of the Golden Corral par for the course.

Wow, and they have filtered all of those five star reviews - not the ones from yesterday, but the ones from well before that. Way to go Yelp....

Yelp is an extortionistic internet demon. I loathe yelp.

So Yelp dismissed all genuine reviews, even those from long before this thing started, but they do recommend this moron's review? That boggles the mind...

Of course! That's how Yelp operates.

Wow. No recourse in trying to get it taken down, that is awful.
