Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone had tried this? Will a 50mm 1.8 lens fit on a 5D Mk I and if so, do the pictures look nice?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Mark.

Fantastic combination, but I'm sure it will be only a matter of time someone will pipe up about inconsistent focusing and build quality.

Thanks for the information. I've just bought a 5D Mk 1 so I'm glad to hear it fits.

Are there any examples of photos taken with this combination?

For future reference, any Canon lens designated "EF" will fit on a 5d. "EF-S" will not. ;)

Yes, you can get some pretty funky effects and DOF with it.

I could have found a better shot if I had bothered to check through my hard drive. But I just took this one from the patio right now to follow up on this thread.

Its pretty hazy and overcast here right now and lots of smoke from wildfires in Washington State so the background is crappy.

I can`t see the EXIF settings in here (my re-sizer must have stripped them) but that was taken at F1.8

I Was thinking of getting a 24-105L lens for 50-80mm portraits, but I don't think I'll bother now.

The 50mm 1.8 is decent enough. Can't argue with it's images. Just a bit noisy after a while of shooting. Lying in bed and you can hear the AF motor in your head lol

Not so worried about noise, as long as it takes a good picture.

Is the 24-105mm lens at 50mm better quality than 50mm 1.8 lens?

I've never really compared them. I never use the 50mm 1.8. Always have the 24-105 or 70-200 bolted on. The 50mm for me is a back up incase they two ever break.

Yes people have, yes it will fit, and depending on your copy, yes the 50 1.8 will take nice pictures. The 24-105 f4 is a different animal than the 50 1.8, it serves a different purpose. It might make sense to determine what you want to shoot, then get the appropriate lens. The 24-105 would work well on the 5D MKI too.

Here is a link to a whole album with only 5D classic + 50mm f/1.8 II shots. This was for POTN's "Where is Nifty" thread. Just keep in mind that until then I had only shot birds and wasn't used to 50mm, so most are mere snapshots, but I thought that maybe you would find it interesting just the same. :)
