From a concert last night of a band from Minneapolis MN that my son played a few shows with when he was in a band in MN as well. I love small venues when you can get right up at the edge of the stage. It was the only lens I brought with me, even then, this shot was still taken at 16000 ISO.

Who needs 8 strings really? Great shot, I can just imagine he's about the slide down the neck and drop into a riff. Captures the mood!

Daniel...I gotta ask...I see this in a bunch of images lately..and am trying to figure it out...is there much blur added in post for that image? The person and the reeds around are good and clean, sharp...but the bg is nice and softly OOF...I struggle with trying to achieve that.

No blur added at all, only sharpness and some grain. That blur (bokeh) depends on many things such as aperture (wide open here @1.8) and the distance between the subject and camera, but also depends on the distance between subject and background, and on the composition itself, if you add foreground to blur then the models pops even more

I understand the basic concepts...but never get the blur when I am far enough away from the subject like that to get them full height like that, I always wondered if the blur as tweaked in post...thanks for letting me know it wasn't...I love my 85 1.8...probably ought to get out and shoot more with it..and try a few things.

T, here is a prime example of what I think you are talking about. I used the 85 1.8 (2.2 in this image). Since I was plretty close to the performer, I was able to get his hand close to me in the bokeh, as well as the gear and wall behind him blurred out. He is pretty good as far as being in focus across his body and part of his guitar, which is what I was going for.

For comparison, I was probably no more than 5 feet away from the performer. So if I had been further back, more would have been in focus on his body and guitar, but I still think the wall would have been OOF since it was about 15 feet behind him. Where as the drum kit in image left was only about 5 or so feet away from him.

the being further from the subject, with more of the background out of focus is what I am after...while maintaining good focus on the subject...I understand the concepts...as it relates to distance to subject, and distance of background to subject...but it never seems to turn out the way I figure...or the way I see others getting results...there is a guy that posts on another forum that shoots ballet dancers in urban environments...south florida or something like that...and the dancer and all extremities are sharp...but the backgrounds are buttery smooth and soft...it seems that when I get too far away from my subject, I lose some of the OOF background...I dunno...need to practice...
