Many American's would have to google what sport the Maple Leafs play...and then we would have to google "hockey".

I'm sure that many Americans would also have to Google whether to put an apostrophe in the plural of American!:D (To save you the bother, the answer is 'no'.)

Actually, many Americans already know that. It's the few who don't.

Also, many Americans would know that the period goes inside the quotes, but many British know it goes outside. But then you use single quotes as primaries while we use doubles. Go figure.

Many British feel that it doesn't make sense for the full stop to go inside the quotes. ;)

And for some of us it makes more sense for double quotes to be used when quoting speech and single quotes for other uses, including quoted quotes.

But as long as we keep on misunderstanding each other, I guess everything will be OK :)

In the sentence I used, the full stop has to go outside the quotation marks. It would make no sense otherwise.

May I suggest you remove this current discussion to this site (external link)? Unless, of course, you're indulging in particularly subtle humour, in which case emoticons would be appropriate. Otherwise, take the advice at the link provided.

It certainly is! Two peoples separated by a common tongue, what could be funnier?

So you two are now saying that grammar is a joke?

Nay, fair wight! Grammar is no joke. The ways in which people (mis)use grammar, however, is sometimes funny as all get out.

He said he was just kidding so, perhaps, we should give him the benefit of the doubt!
