Is this the lull before the storm, or is Canon going out with a whimper this time?

Canon has done a masterful job of guarding their info. So far, there has been no leaks whatsoever regarding the purported 7D successor (in fact we don't know if there will be one). All rumors are made-up, or educated guesses at best.

...All rumors are made-up, or educated guesses at best.

Isn't that the core definition of a rumor? Heck, if it were know facts, it would simply be called a fact. :)

And what do you mean the rumor mill has been quite. There are 14 current 7DII rumor threads on the fist page alone, 5 updated in the last week and 2 within the last hour. That's a lot of blabbing for a non-existant camera.

Well, you are in the rumor site, therefore.... it's just a rumor. ;) You can breath again. :)

I've been lurking on some of the 7D mkII threads for a year now. And I have a question.

Has Canon ever stopped production of a popular selling camera model and stopped supplying retailers with that camera model wihout some sort of replacement in the works?

Or was the stopping of production of the 7D just a rumor, too.

Maybe it is my perception and it is wrong but it seems like a few posters in these threads are hoping that a 7D II is not ever produced or hope that it is not advanced over the 7D model enough so that it will fail.

70D was the 7Dmk2 lite. I don't think there will be a real 7D mk2. Nikon hasn't made a product for that segment in a long time either.

Depends on your definition of 'popular', I suppose.

The 20Da was a popular.. among astrophotographers. It was axed in 2006 and had no successor till 2012 when the 60Da was released.

Some 1-series studio photographers would argue their line was cut when the 1Ds3 went out of production.

But as for ceasing production of a popular camera model unequivocally without replacement (tantamount to cutting the entire line), Canon hasn't done this in digital history.

The only reason I see for expecting a new 7d, is that Canon hasn't updated DPP 3 as per their announcement (following the release of DPP 4 for FF only). Maybe they will offer the new version with a new crop body.

....

...and ever MORE 1D shooters will argue that the 1D line was cut after the 1D IV by the same logic. 1D used to sell for $4,500.00, now Canon wants $7.5k for the "X"

I'm not sure I would call the 70D the 7DmkII lite, more like the 7Dlite.

I think there are two camps, one group who think that the 7D replacement will be a home run offering a revolutionary new sensor and a few beefed up 70D features. The other camp is concerned that all we will get is a 70D with a few beefed up features which will be really disapointing as Canon has basically skipped a release and the 7DII really should be the 7DIII. This is what is driving the higher expectations and anything less than that is going to get a lot of bad press.

It's got the new sensor.

There are a lot of people hoping that should read 'a new sensor' rather than 'the new sensor'....

It does but the new sensor does not address the few areas where Canon has fallen behind. If your a video shooter, it's handy but for others, not so much. The IQ of the 70D is near identical to the 7D across the board while the IQ of competitors keeps getting better.
