Looking to buy one of these tonight, nervous about all the AF issues I read about, I am going to buy from keh, what happens if I get one that has AF issues, will canon still fix it for free?

I asked them about 14 months ago (when I got my 1DMk3) and they said yes, they would check to see if it needed the fix, if it had been already done, and if necessary, perform the fix (mine was in the affected serial number range) ... this was Canon Canada, by the way.

I have never proceeded further with this, as mine has never demonstrated a problem as some 1DMk3 have been reported to do ... either mine is unaffected, or the fix had already been performed (it had been sent in at least once by previous owner(s) for a checkup).

Isn't there a silver dot (~2.5mm) in the battery compartment for those that have been fixed?

I thought that too, but not on mine ... I've also heard it's a blue dot and a white dot ... mine has no dots ...

Mine is the same, Canon have confirmed that it hasn't been done. However, it's fine, I took a risk buying it as it's in the affected range, but it hasn't let me down yet (motorsport / wildlife)

Mine has more of a white dot? Not sure, but the previous owner told me he bought the camera refurbished. The serial number is not in the affected range either.

I'm having trouble finding Canon documentation on this, but it looks like a blue dot on the box means the fix was done at the factory. A white dot in the battery compartment means that the fix has been done on the body.

Jenn, maybe that means they just put a white dot on all those after the problem was rectified. I don't remember my status with it -- need to refresh my memory... camera's not here though

The camera box had a blue dot on it to signify that those cameras were manufactured after the hardware had been redesigned to solve the problem. There is no dots on these camera bodies.

The white dot was a smudge of paint that Canon repair reps added in the battery compartment for the older cameras that were retrofitted with the new mirror box assembly that was supposed to fix the focus problem.

I'm not quite sure what the dots mean either, waterrockets. Why even put a dot in an unaffected camera body? I'm so confused, but glad the camera is working just fine. :)

I think you have that in reverse because mine has a white dot and the serial number on my 1D3 (569xxx) indicates it is one of the cameras manufactured with the updated mirror mechanism, according to Canon here: http://usa.canon.com …il&docId=0901e0248004cd3d (external link).

Thanks for the link, Jenn.

This line caught my eye:

"Please note that the issue occurs only in some of the unmodified EOS-1D Mark III cameras within this serial number range. If your EOS-1D Mark III camera is operating correctly, it will not be necessary to have it repaired for this issue."

So, hypothetically, a 1DMk3 with a serial within the "red zone" could have been checked, found fine, and then maybe no dots were applied.

Possible?

I know my serial is in the red zone, it has no dots, and works fine ... so maybe that's also a possibility.

Some good info thanks. I noticed when shooting BIFs and other moving subjects that I was getting a much higher keeper rate using my 1D2N than with the 1D3. I'll have to test it some more before I go to Yellowstone this weekend.
