Another User pointed this thread out to me.

While at with my wife we stumbled on a Leica Store (actually I knew it was there ha!) but I spent a few hours in the store with one of the salesmen.

I currently shoot a 6D with 24-70 MK II and 70-200 MK II. Not the lightest setup there is and a bit heavy when using all day.

I mainly shoot
-Travel
-Landscapes
-Astro (hardly ever really but would like to)
-Family snap shots

My goals
-bring my camera anywhere
-lighten the load so easier to carry
-not be embarrassed to pull out in tight crowds (this happens with travel, hard to pull out that camera with a 70-200 on it and not get stares)
-Enjoy photography (sometimes my 6D feels more like work then play) I enjoy photography but lately have been leaving my camera at home because its a lot to carry around.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has made the move from FF with lenses to the Leica M system and looking for your input. I figured this would be the pace to ask.

Camera: Leica M240 - Summilux 35mm 1.4 FLE

Put pancake on 6D and enjoy. Most of the weight and size comes from lenses you have.
You could also put Olympus 28 mm old MF prime on it, to keep it very small, but wide.

I decided to opt for the Sony a7R instead. It's actually smaller and lighter than the Leica. It also offers a better sensor and a good system for manual focus. You can get an M mount adaptor for it and use Leica's tiny and superior primes.

The 6D is a delight to use with the small 40mm pancake, and the weight is in line with a Leica setup.
6D + 40mm = 885 grams
Leica M + 35mm f/2 ASPH = 934 grams

The 40mm is a very sharp lens and for $150 the quality is outstanding, though note the bokeh it produces is very unexceptional and compares unfavourably to even Voigtlander lenses.

Voigtlander 15mm III - 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH - 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M FLE - 50mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH

Yeah I had the 40mm was nice. but still have a large body behind it.

Was considering of Selling the 6D and 24-70MKII and 70-200MKII for the M240 and selling the SL1 setup I have for my wife for the A7 with the 24-70 and the adapter. Seems to cover everything.
Thoughts?

I shoot all of my personal work with an MM and a 35 lux..

For my professional work I am going to eventually get a color body, hopefully a new M-E if the rumors are true and if Leica keeps it real stripped down with the new sensor, a used M9P or M-E for back up ,21 lux and a 90 cron. I will dump all my Canon gear. I have just fallen in love with the rangefinder shooting experience and that insanely good Leica glass.

Sold my M9 and have been looking for an M240.

I thought I could get by with my Leica lenses on my A7R but it's just not the same experience I'm used to with the M9 :(

Hope to find one and join the Leica lovers again soon.

Not sure if you want new, or used....but keep an eye out on popflash for mint used M240's for pretty good prices. I missed out on one for $4999 last week, but a few days later they posted one for $5100 with less than 300 shots. Showed up and looked brand new with a thumbs up grip and A&A strap.

I regretted selling my M9 also and after trying multiple cameras that used EVF's I said the heck with it and went with another Leica!

I found the one on the Leica T to be enjoyable. Not as nice as the OVF but they have come a long long way since the last time I used one.

Its not that bad when you start comparing the M to other manufacturer's "top of the line" cameras, with similar build quality (B+H prices, 1DX - $6799 M240 - $6950)
it does get a bit more expensive when you start looking at new lenses, but there is plenty of cheaper glass on the secondhand market.

And you wont loose money on Leica M glass. In fact in most cases you actually get what you paid or if you hold on long enough might even make a decent profit. Try that with Canon or Nikon...
