Brothers daughter and her little ones on the lake. I think this lens does fine for "action" shots.

Had this lens for a few months now. I mostly shoot birds. The first of a Coopers Hawk was processed using Adobe Camera Raw so the exif data shows the correct lens in flickr. The second shot of my daughters puppy Cummins was processed using Apple Aperture which shows a different lens. The photos of Cummins won a blue ribbon in the Idaho State Fair for Best Smile.

Nice boating shots.

Shots this lens isn't that slow after all for all those nay-sayers.

Very best,

Hey guys, looking to get this lens to replace my 70-200 f4L IS. Since moving away from crop bodies, I am looking for more reach. My questions is how good is this lens at panning? I shoot a lot of motorsports events with low shutter speed pans. The 70-200 has the dedicated panning mode for the IS and I use this quite a bit. I have seen 1-2 panning shots in here, but not sure if those were made with VC on or off or if the VC fights against panning. I am between this lens and the 100-400 which has the dedicated mode. Thanks for your help!

^ According to Tamron, VC should be off while panning. So, if you do a lot of panning, maybe the 100-400, unless you really need the reach of the 600.

I wouldn't get it as a "replacement" for the 70-200 f/4L IS... which is a peach of a lens. I use it more now on a FF than I did on a crop, just for general photography.

Thanks for the help! Yes, I do a lot of panning, so probably going to be looking at the 100-400. I like my 70-200 a lot, but doesn't seem to be as useful to me as when I had it on my 7D. I dunno, we will see what happens. I may buy a cheap Rebel body for this lens :). Sorry if getting off topic.

No worries Baller. It is a legitimate question and this group should be able to tell you their success or failures on panning with this lens. I have not tried panning in any way, but I know this lens is going to be on my 6D a lot with the shots I have been able to accomplish with it.
I would say the fact that the 100-400 has a panning IS setting will deliver better shots in that capacity, but it you need the reach, you may be able to make this beast work out for you instead of spending multi $k on a Canon lens.

I agree with everyone else. Since the 100-400 has the dedicated IS mode for panning, and that seems important to you, I would go that route. As for panning with the Tamron, they say to leave the VC off while panning so this may not suite your needs.

Thanks a lot for your help. I would love to have the 600mm reach, but the panning ability is more important for what I need the lens to do. Had to crop down photos a lot from my 70-200 this weekend and would love to get closer, but motorsports staff usually restricts how close we can get, so zooming with my feet isn't always an option. Thanks again!

Each tool has it's pro's and con's. For what you need it for, it sounds like the 100-400 is a better option.
