So something interesting has been happening. My Synology backup solution is no longer a great tool. With over a TB of pictures to back up it takes almost 48 hours to do an entire backup. Today I had to do one since all of my data was lost. I now want to switch to something else, (10 MBs transfer speeds are to slow.)

What is everyone using as there backup solution? I am on PC but that should not matter.

Thanks for the help.

I use a USB3 external hard drive. Starting with an empty backup drive, it takes several hours to do a full backup of my internal data drive, which holds about 2tb of data including photographs. But my backup procedure copies only new and changed files. So, after the first backup, subsequent backups typically take a few minutes.

I think there are software applications that will do this for you. Or, if you are familiar with the Windows command line, you can use XCOPY /D. If you do this, you probably want the /V, /S, and /Y switches as well.

Doesn't it have an option to do incremental back-ups? I'm using Crash plan to back up to an external drive. The initial back-up takes 18 hours but thereafter it just adds or deletes to/from that backup so the changes just take a few moments.

What software is you using when taking the backup?
And what configuration options+

10MB/s transfer speeds? You have only 100Mbit/s network?

Or have you filled the NAS or the PC disk almost totally full so source or destination is suffering badly from fragmentation?

I have a 1GB/s network. This morning running at around 35-50MB/s however I noticed I have a CAt5e from Router to server but only Cat5 from PC to Router. I wonder if that has anything to do with it and I might go grab 2x Cat 6 cables to figure it out.

I have had NAS units switching down to 100Mbit/s because of issues with cables, so it's always meaningful to verify if all links are running at 1Gbit/s. You should most probably be able to look at the color of the link LED on the router. And you can look at the properties of your network connection on your PC.

Also noticed for the first time my Synology only rated for 64 MB/s. That could be part of the issue might need to upgrade for one of the faster ones.

[my computer has two identical, 1TB hard drives]

  • Copy memory card to HDD #2, the bulk backup drive
  • Cull images and then copy the keepers to HDD #1
  • Import files into Lightroom and edit everything
  • Publish as DNG files back to HDD #2 using this (external link)
  • Carbonite auto-uploads the published files
  • Delete the original files from HDD #2
