Looks like I am going to pull the trigger on the canon 24-70 f/4 soon. Price is very attractive. Any advice on choice between USA or imported copy would be greatly appreciated.

For the minimal price difference, get the USA version just so there's no chance of warranty issues.

Refurbished lenses from canon carry a full 1 year warranty.

$800 is better than most used prices. Plus you're buying from CANON. Almost as good as B&H...

Here's the straight scoop: (hopefully this helps you decide)

- From a physical standpoint, USA models and Imported models are exactly the same.
- Officially, imported models do not come with a 1-yr warranty from Canon.
- Canon almost always honors imported lenses as if they have a 1-yr warranty, but this is not guaranteed.
- Imported lenses from Adorama and B&H come with a Adorama/B&H 1-yr warranty. For all intents and purposes, this is just as good as Canon's warranty.
- Be wary of non-reputable stores that offer a 1-yr warranty on imported lenses. Adorama and B&H are highly reliable. Other stores that aren't official Canon dealers, not so much. (As far as in-store warranties are concerned.)
- Refurbished lenses from Canon come with a Canon 1-yr warranty.

Apply the info above to your situation, the prices you're looking at, and that should help you decide.

Hope this helps!

+1, Bryan. A perfectly accurate summary of the Canon warranty situation. :)

Yes, refurbish from Canon usually the best deal.
The price of US vs import from major retailers are not much different, so not very worth it to buy import.
Rebate, there is usually no rebate for import model. So if you can wait, there usually is a rebate like one in every other month, and when that happen US model become cheaper.
Location, location, location. Depend on where you live, if you live somewhat close to the Canon repair center, it's much more ideal to have the US warranty than to have the retailer warranty. Say if you can drive to Canon center and drop your lens off for repair, calibration, cleaning, etc. And get it back in just a few days.

This is good info. If I'm not mistaken, the same applies to import camera bodies as well. This is the one area where canon beats Nikon handily.

how does it work if you buy where they do 2 years, do you get 2 years if you move still?

I'm not aware of any Canon USA warranty, or any Adorama or B&H imported warranty that is more than one year in length. Which warranty are you referring to?

Also, I may be misunderstanding your question, but if you move to a different address it does not effect warranty coverage. Do be aware though that Canon's warranty does not transfer from one owner to another. As for other stores that offer a warranty, it is best to read their specific policy.

Sorry if I was unclear, they offer 2 years warranty in France. So in those 2 years if you were in the USA or elsewhere would they fix it?
