My Dilemma: 5D MKIII and 7D MKII

Now, I'm convinced that 5DIV is in the offing, I'd say within a year or year and half from now. That's another thing that nags me to consider selling my 5DIII before it's too late, get the 7DII for now, and use the difference and saved up money towards 5DIV. How's that for a perfect combo!

I'd wait for the 5D5.

Before you make a decision, make sure you read and understand "equivalence" with respect to full frame VS crop, and how it affects ISO and Aperture in addition to lens focal length. A good place to start is at this link - http://www.dpreview.co​m …ock-Homepage&ref=features

The 7D2 is not a crop 1dx.... it's a crop 5D3 with more FPS with a few added features of the 1dx.

No... it isn't. I shoot both too, very frequently (in fact these days mostly crop), the difference is minimal between two good sensors in low ISO (and no, I wouldn't call the old 18mp crop sensor a "good" sensor anymore). Saying "FF quality is always better" is straight up hyperbole. Period.

And the 7D2 has better specs than the 5D3 for almost everything but the sensor, so again, I say it's closer to the 1DX. For anyone who doesn't sit in front of their monitor with a magnifying glass, the 7D2 is the obvious better choice for sports/wildlife.

Thats the struggle with digital cameras, you buy the latest and greatest thing and something better is released not too long after (look at Nikon)

I say just enjoy the 5D3. If you need the reach and fps, sell it for a 7DII and don't look back or lose hair over it. Cameras are horrible "investments" so just enjoy want you have or can afford

I just ordered the 7D Mark II specifically for wildlife photography, especially birds. I like that the crop-factor gives me more zoom with reasonably priced telephoto lenses (300mm and 400mm prime) plus a 100-400mm zoom.

I'm thinking about the same thing. I bought a 5D3 when the first came out and got rid of 1D3 and 50D... Shoot a lot of sports. Been waiting a long time for the 7D2. Since then I've not been shooting as much and want to do more wildlife. I'm leaning towards keeping both.

Well of course.... never once doubted that. I always said similar framed, uncropped. And I've got plenty of comparisons for you man and it's there.

And? Comparing Canon's 18mp crop sensors to their newest FF sensors isn't a fair comparison. Try that comparison with the 70D sensor or a Sensor from Sony or Fuji and you'd see the difference isn't nearly as drastic.

I suggest going ahead and buying the 7D II from a retailer with a great return policy (B&H, Adorama, etc.), but don't sell the 5D III untill you try out the 7D II. If it's all that Canon says it is, it really should be a crop-frame "1DX" (in terms of fps, processing power, and AF prowess) for wildlife imagery. And if you love it, then throw the 5D III up on the POTN sell forum and find it a new owner. Or, if you don't like the 7D II, return for a full refund.

And, frankly, that is what the retailers want you to do...they've got those great return policies to make it easier for us to make these hard decisions.

Finally, a word about photography: Focus your passion on what you love (birds, wildlife), and don't worry about the side stuff - the occaisional performing arts shots, etc. Do the one thing and get great at it (really preaching to myself here!).

Looks like the 7DmkII does have good ISO for a crop, but is still not going to be the same as a 5DmkIII. If you spend equal time with portraits vs sports, then I would vote keeping the 5DmkIII for portraits and getting the 7DmkII for sports. Get the best of both worlds! As for worrying with depreciation and if you should save for a 5DmkV, then it's best not to ever buy a camera! The instant you buy a camera it depreciates. Lenses hold their value better, but with bodies I don't think it's "worth" it to sell them. Canon seems pretty consistant with releasing the 5D series. I suspect they'll announce a 5DmkIV next year: 5DmkV would be 2018 then (see, you don't have to wait til 2020)!
