Canon officially announces the 7D Mark II

It should be pretty obvious that it's not going to match a current FF sensor for low-light, high-ISO noise. Better than the 7D certainly, and probably better than a 70D, but better than the 6D? Unlikely in the extreme.

Of course, anyone who thought that it would match a FF sensor in those areas was smoking something pretty strong. If it is better than the 70D wrt low-light, high-ISO noise, with everything else that it has, it is going to be a great camera. It just won't be what it isn't, which is a camera that excels at every photographic task, which seems to be what some expected.

I want a second camera. I really don’t need it but I want it for a few reasons, one is so that I can help teach/share the world of photography with my daughters who have kids and my son, all of which have interest in photography. That’s probably the most important reason of all.
I currently own the 5D MK III, (I sold my T3I and 6D). I shoot pictures of everything , portraits, food, grandkids at the park, their t-ball, soccer games, and candid photos of people in the stands.
I’ve created a Pros and Cons tailored to what’s important to me;

There may be more of moms, dads and yes pawpaws just like me. Trying to get the best second camera just like me.

Five years after the 7D and this is what we waited for? Really Canon?

Even Sony who long ago lost their mojo when it comes to their bread and butter product, Television, is kicking your sorry ass.

Perhaps a few more dollars in R&D.

Can't be that hard on Canon. Feature wise the camera is a home run. They just haven't made progress on the sensor front yet but they will. Maybe the rumored new sensor is targeted for the 5DIV.

Does anybody remember how long the wait to get the 5D III was after the 5D III came out, do you think there will be long wait after the 7D II is released?

I've been thinking about picking up a 7D for the past few months as a second body for photographing some of my kids' sports outings. I'm now thinking about waiting until November to see if I can save a bit more money when everyone looks to offload the mk i bodies to get a mk ii.

The question is whether the price on a used 7D will be significantly lower in November than it is now. Any thoughts?

ETA: I've currently got a 5dii so the wait won't kill me.

^ Answer will be yes. I suspect the 7D2 will be confirmed to be a fine camera in November once it is in the hands of the customers, and this will flood the used market with 7Ds. So, win-win for you - I would wait till November and see what happens.

^^Agreed. By then, I'm guessing I'll have a very nice condition 7D MkI I'd be willing to part with for a decent price.

I would bet Canon has something in the works for their higher end camera's, revolutionary. But, I wouldn't hold my breath, a few years ago Canon was supposed to come out with a 24mp Rebel for the consumer. The market conditions will dictate what technologies are available and at what price.
Also people would be pissed that Canon only made the 7D2 with a 20.2mp. Lots of people love to brag about having more, even if they don't know why..

In terms of pushing shadows on low ISO shots, I downloaded this file in raw, opened it in Irfanview and converted to a tiff. Opened that in camera raw (it wouldn't open the raw file, hence the extra step in Irfanview) and increased exposure 3.5 stops and cropped it for the shadow area (the tree). In the second set, I took the original image and pushed the shadow slider to the maximum, but didn't change the original exposure. The crop is from the shadowy right side of the image. No other editing. Here are the results, the unchanged original and the cropped image with the pushed exposure, and the entire image with the pushed shadow setting and a crop from it.You can judge for yourself how well this 7D II raw performed when pushed. It was ISO 100.
