Challenge #502, Print
RESULTS
A healthy number of images this week, all interesting and well shot. I wish I didn't have to choose just three.
Needsnow, "Iconic British Symbol": That's iconic, all right, and colorful, too. The green background is perfect for setting off the red booth.
Spoco57, "Thankfull his wife died?": Funny. I wonder whether the engraver ever regretted using that wording.
Trumper, no title: This is cute and has something I didn't expect, handprints as well as words. I should have PMed you a reminder to add a title. I've been distracted by a bad cold since the middle of last week.
Maureen Souza, "Packing Crates": It's nostalgia time for me because I spent my childhood near enough Fresno that the Sun-Maid company was a very important institution in the local economy. This photo conveys the massive scale of raisin-making. The slice of blue sky speaks of the California heat that dries those Thompson Seedless into raisins.
Jim Askew, "Times Square Billboards": This is so lively that it could inspire eager excitement or sensory overload, depending on the viewer. It certainly says "Urban!" Surprised that one spot lacks an ad.
teekay, "Medieval Fonts": The samples make print the whole story in this image. Having studied calligraphy, I recognize these forms as derived from hand lettering with a wide-nib pen. Isn't it neat how writing in Gothic times is tall and elegant like Gothic cathedrals, and writing from the early medieval period is short and rounded like the domed churches of that time?
rpolitsr, "colonial tombstone": A glimpse of history and culture. Sr. Sanchez, merchant, must have been an important man of his time, and probably a rich one, to merit a monument requiring so much handwork.
marie, "necessary equipment": Plenty of equipment, more than I'd want to carry. The "Official Photographer" lettering is one of the most lightweight pieces but is necessary to keep people from standing in front of him.
Sibil, "Guys' R&R": Beer and sports--yes, I've heard of those things. Apparently they're "necessary equipment" for a night out. A scene that says fun times to many viewers.
Raven, "Old Coca-Cola Mini Billboard": Another survival from an earlier time. This ad is in remarkably good shape for something its age that's been outdoors so much.
Winners
It's hard to choose among these ten, but here are my picks, using secret and totally subjective criteria not mentioned above:
#1
Raven, "Old Coca-Cola Mini Billboard"
#2
rpolitsr, "colonial tombstone"
#3
Maureen Souza, "Packing Crates"
---------------
This week's topic is print. Printed words, numbers, and other symbols are an everyday sight, from tiny clothing tags to huge billboards. Let your photo feature something printed as an essential element that helps to define the scene. For this purpose, I want to exclude handwriting (yes, skywriting too) and painting.
