I'd assume if they can put the affordable 7DII's 20MP up to 10FPS, then we should be able to get the 5D3 6 FPS with a 38-40MP file in a more pricey body no problem.

I just hope they get that button fixed that's supposed to correctly frame the photo. It'd be a shame with all the technology that's most assuredly built in to the camera if I still keep taking lousy shots because I've got the angle, perspective, point of view, etc. all wrong.

Good point. The thing I keep coming back to though is: a ~20MP file is good for printing at ~1m (~39") wide. How many shooters are printing that big (regularly)? Some landscape guys, maybe architectural guys. Probably few others I suspect.

I guess there's the argument of cropping/reach though; whereby a 40MP FF image would result in a pretty usable ~15MP APS-C crop.

What would the 5D4 need to have to make it even better?

My wish list...

  1. The sensor from the Nikon D610
  2. 1/500 option for minimum shutter speed
  3. Spot metering linked to the AF point
  4. Same CF + SD card slots as 7D2
  5. Same buffer size as 7D2

A technical comparison of sensor technology: Exposure Latitude (external link)

I was just comparing the specs of the D750, 5D3 and the D810.

The D750 is spec-wise placed a lot closer to the 5D3. 5D3 has faster max shutter speed and high ISO performance, while the D750 has the exmor sensor. The D810 is of course a different beast.

Prices on Amazon today: D750: $2300, 5D3: $3400, D810: $3300.

I suppose Canon can do whatever they want, but given the pricing of the competition, it would seem that the price ceiling for a purported 5D4 has to be ~ $3500 or so.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

  1. The DR from the A7/D610 sensor would be nice, but I wouldn't be willing to give up ~1 stop at high ISO to get it and the resolution difference between the two is meaningless.
  2. I would assume the 5D4 will have the same auto ISO setup as the 7D2 which lets you set minimum shutter speed to anything you want. Canon seems to have finally perfected auto ISO implementation.
  3. I've never really understood why people are so concerned about this. We already have evaluative metering linked to AF point. AE lock makes this mostly unnecessary but I guess some people like it.
  4. I'm actually hoping that Canon upgrades the 5D3 SD card slot to UHS-2 or even a second CF slot.
  5. I'd be very happy with ~30 RAW in the buffer, especially if they upgrade the FPS to 8FPS. I suspect the 5D4 will end up being a budget studio camera though so we'll probably see higher MP, similar framerate, and similar buffer depth.

Shooting dance comps in a theater with moving subjects is why #3 is important to me. Most of the comps I shoot have a black curtain across the backstage or they are just poorly lit. Evaluative metering will include that background into the overall metering thus blowing out the faces of the dancers or the bright costumes they are wearing.

Adorama has a killer deal going for the 5D mkIII right now. Special bundle for 2849.00 (external link)

I hope there is a 5DIV on the near horizon, because I will pick up a 5DIII for a great price when the new one hits the shelves! :D (unless the mkIV is really a game changer, then I may pony up for it instead)

I am guessing that they will move the 6D into the 24mp/5fps range (With a price increase) and move the 5d line into the higher resolution area, 36mp/6fps. Would love the see that 46mp that gets thrown around, but who knows.

I would like to see something in line with the D810. A 30+MP sensor with good DR and maybe dual pixel for superior movie focus speeds, with a 1.2 crop option for smaller size files when you don't need the full resolution in order to exchange that for faster FPS.

Other than that I guess the 7D2 focus system will come as well.
And hopefully, someday, a spot metering from focus point.

It will have to do better than that.

Sony's bringing out a 46-54MP FF camera in January. Sooner or later, that sensor will find its way into a Nikon.

For image quality-focused photographers, those extra megapixels are a significant jump.

Do you think the new sensor will be released in the successor to the a7R? I hope so.
