Didn't know Nikon and Canon only license Japanese companies with their technology.

Interesting. I have no desire to buy but given the price ratio with their speedlights, I'd imagine this thing will be fairly cheap. But if it's not "legal", where will you have to buy it from??

Some moments are too amazing to be ruined with words.

So if it is a complete clone of the Canon 50/1.4, except with lower quality parts and a non-USM AF motor, that means it will: have the same build quality as the Canon 50/1.8, the same IQ as the 50/1.8, the same AF speed/noise as the 50/1.8. But it will be made in China with lower QC and lower quality plastics than the Canon version. Why bother buying it unless they didn't clone the optics, and actually managed to improve on them?

It has the same construction as the Canon 1.4 as far as optics go.

I don't see how you can assume that just because it looks the same.

"I also recently read a bit about how only Japanese companies can get AF licenses for EF and F mount from Canon and Nikon (partly why Zeiss has no AF lenses for those systems)."

did the person who wrote that article know anything about Zeiss? They're manufactured in Japan, by a Japanese company aka Cosina.

Zeiss could make EF and F mount AF lenses, they simply don't want to, or need to for that matter.

Well I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, but usually the company who owns the brand, designs and markets the lenses has to make the contracts, not the company who they outsource production to. Cosina is to Zeiss as Foxconn is to Apple. Foxconn is not going to secure the patents to use a certain tech in the iphone 6. Apple does that.

They both have 6 groups / 7 elements and 8 aperture blades.. I don't mean they literally have the same glass. At the same time I'm willing to bet the performance is very similar.

In addition, *no* other companies have a license to the Canon EF mount spec. That's why Sigma / Tamron have to reverse-engineer (i.e. guess) the autofocus algorithms and typically don't AF quite as well as Canon lenses.

Lot of misinformation in the linked article.
