Beat me to the punch regarding using Manual mode. Shutter priority is used when it is imperative that you require certain shutter speed, be it slow or fast. I suppose it has become rather outdated in the age of digital and ever improving high ISO performance, as auto ISO setting can be more accommodating. I suppose it's a carryover from film media days.

I love the 40mm pancake on A7R. It's the lens I shoot with AF on if I have to, because of its quirky focus-by-wire implementation (meaning that camera metering has to be on for the manual focus to work).

thNks Eugene, I get why you would want shutter priority, what I don't get is why you would want the camera to control the ISO and the aperture. When I tried it there on an f/2 lens it was changing it to f/4 then bumping the ISO to 6400. I thought it would only change the ISO as I wanted to shoot wide open at a minimum shutter speed. I thought my canon didn't change the aperture but it's been a while and I can't remember.

It's ok though as the manual mode way works

whether it's on a Sony or a Canon, the use case you describe there screams out for M mode: you want the shutter speed and aperture at certain settings.

Yep, M mode and auto ISO gives what I'm looking to do.

How do you get these, my child age 2 never stops still, ever, and for the life of me, i could never get a shot of him with my former A7r and 55FE in focus, by the time the camera AF would settle he would be long gone from that position. And my child is my most frequent model so... any tips would be appreciated, since I may pick up A7r again

Pity i missed my kids babies ages because i just started by end of 2005, so until i've got some pro bodies and lenses they grew up already, so i envy parents who did shoot their kids since they were born.

Well, if i will do that, then simply i will keep following him/her, i have to adjust the settings before and then keep watching/following kids, you can't control their moves, but then get used to their moves and just shoot when you feel he/she is in focus, or just shoot 2-4fps every 1-2 minutes, make some voices/noises so he/she can look at you with smiling or whatever expression o their faces, and............... GOOD Luck!!!

No, i lost money this month for some reasons so i was unable to travel at all to anywhere, but still the plan is there for next year, too bad 1 year is wasted and then it means i will not visit another parts of USA sooner if i will travel to PNW next year.

I find it hard sometimes too as he never stops either. For the shot you quoted what you don't see is the 2 or 3 shots either side of the one I posted that I also took, I.e. For every one I post there are 4-6 similar ones taken that are either out of focus or not looking at the camera or whatever due to him moving about so much.

I find it impossible to use my 135L on him as I can't manual focus quick enough. I find the AF on the a7r and fe 55 to be fast enough to capture the moments though.

With regards to technique, I always pre select the AF point and then AF on the eye, so when I see him doing something I quickly work out where I want his eye for composition, change the AF point to that location, then take the shot (s)
