I purchased a refurbished Canon 100-400L on March 31st when they offered only a 90 day warranty instead of the 1 year they now offer . Sure enough it started acting up last Friday (well after the warranty period) and it finally gave up the ghost on Sunday. I sent it in to the Canon repair center in NJ yesterday and just received a Email from them saying they will repair it under warranty for free. I was fully prepared to have to pay for it. Just wanted to say it's nice when a company goes above what is expected. :D

It's always nice when that kind of service happens, I had a few bits replaced on a 5D2 a while back, fully expected to pay when I picked it up and my guy at calumet just said its been done under warranty at Canon, it's nice to receive that kind of service...... :D

That is cool.

I sent my 17-85 to Irvine. I received an email within 4 hours of them signing for it, with a repair estimate. They seem to be pretty quick.

Here in Canada I find the CPS service to be very good. Fast and reasonably priced.

Ribbon Cable replacement - lens wouldn't focus - kept hunting.

I don't have the paperwork - if I remember correctly around $135

Contact Canon ASAP. Worst case scenario is they will give you an estimate once they have it and you can approve or decline the repair once given the cost.

Unfortunately that problem is all too common with the 17-85. It was one of the issues they addressed with the 15-85.

That's awesome! be sure to have it insured though, just in case it happens again. Separate insurance is much better than the Canon warranty IMO, since it protects other areas like theft or loss of item.

Every time I've sent something in for what has seemed to be a minor issue I can fairly large bills. I dropped a 85L and the estimate was 1900. I said just trash it. Over the weekend my lens was stuck to my camera body. I thought it was a strange issue to have happen but obviously something was faulty. Well canon found a million things wrong with it and the bill is $1700. At 5K worth of gear I have no choice to pay...

For what it's worth, I was informed of a minimum $180 by Canon CS for any repair service not under warranty just a few days ago.

I always have my cameras sensor and viewfinder clean at the Canon N.J. facility for $32 bucks. Now they charge $52 for sensor and $220 for viewfinder cleaning. Telling me that the viewfinder cleaning is a repair. This is not right Canon! Are you losing money?

Certain cameras viewfinder require to open body to clean. Same time requirements.
